just watched the itv news and it stated that the government has increased the quota for the trawlers by 11%.
****ing ********s.
they have fallen for there trap of more fish in the sea as they couldnt land what they wanted because of the cod.lies blody lies.
these so called humans should feel a thousand shames.
thats us mere mortal sea-anglers stuffed once again.
some say we have and our governing bodys have.
why, what have we done to diserve this, wonder if there are any jobs going,
as it looks like if you/we cant stop them,
then why not join them.at least we can find out where there sea-cock is and open it so it blody sinks.

you could look at it another way, they will not be catching anymore fish, they will just be landing more, the fish they have been throwing back dead. Weigh this along side the reduction in days fishing per month, far more important, remeber if the commercials loose a whole month to bad weather they can not carry these days over. Somewhere along the line there has to be a happy medium, along with other measures, scrap the quota system for a total weight (with provisos) set aside areas where no commercial fishing takes place, could be the golden mile, but then that hits the inshore fishermen who do the least damage to stocks. We will have to wait and see.

just as I said elsewhere, its not quite so bad as it appears, the increased quotas/reduction of days at sea is supposed to balance out the discards, so no more fish should be caught than at present, but some commercials will exploit.

One thing I would of liked to have seen is the quota leasing system outlawed, a handful of big outfits monopolising the quotas, and re-selling quota allowance at a premium

there's also the some new stuff where commercials can earn extra days at sea/quotas by reporting areas where they are landing small fish, then avoiding them/closing them as nursery areas. be nice to think that will work and get used properly

This may sound daft but 11% is good news.

The reason for this is that every year the government pay Cefas to do surveys of our fish stocks.

Every year Cefas come up with a lot of scientific figures to advise the government. Lets face it , if you pay someone 25-30 million a year to come up with some figures for you

1. They ought to be accurate figures.

2. After paying so much you would expect the person paying to take heed of the advice you have bought.

For years Cefas have been advising a ZERO catch for north sea cod as they are an endangered species in their opinion. But fisherman have always been given a quota....so thats 30 million well spent...not.

This year for the first time in many years Cefas recommended an increase in the quota. This was based on a good spawning year in 2005 and those fish are growing and surviving well.

Their prediction indicates that fish stocks have grown from 35,000 tonnes at the start of this year to 60,000 tonnes.

Their recommendation was that if quota's were increased by the recommended amount the stocks would be likely to grow to 190,000 tonnes by 2009.

The increased figure they recommended ?

11%

Ok there are a lot of ifs and buts in these quoted figures and I will re read the cefas report to make sure I got the quoted figures right.

But to put the figure of 190,000 tonnes into perspective that is similar to the good old days of the late eighties. The record cod of 52lb was caught in 92 and from speaking to the skipper at least one other 40 + was caught that day.

Maybe I would consider paying a license fee by the end of 2009 :D

Cheers
Dave
