JFK2 and caravan flood warning!

So we arrived last Friday and Norman had graciously invited me out on Slinky Kate on Saturday morning. I was massively looking forward to it and I had my new(to me)reel, but not my rod Stan had re-built for me, as I wasn't picking that up until Sunday. It was a bit blustery on Saturday, but it was great to catch up with Norman after almost a year and we had great fun and a fish or two, while Tony did the business on the day with a double shot of 7lb plus cod. Reel worked a treat and today was the day on JFK2 for a 10hr session to christen my new rod.

I awoke to blue skies and little wind and set off for the Tyne with hopes high. We left the river and steamed to a wreck. My rod was getting admiring glances with it's luminous green whipping and black backing. I was asked what make it was and said Sonik. The guy next to me said it didn't look like a Sonik, so I explained Stan had done a brilliant job on it.

After a while fishing with "Slinky" shads I had a good take and soon boated this nice 5.7lb cod. I felt amazing, rod christened and I could feel in my water that this was to be my day!

However the fishing went a bit quiet and for no reason whatsoever, my reel started making a horrible noise and basically seized up! Allan didn't know what was wrong but loaned me one of his and I was back fishing again somewhat disappointed at my bad luck.

The bad luck continued, as the fishing, at least for me, stayed quiet with just the odd few coming to the boat, but not on my rod. Chuffed as.... with my new snazzy rod, I kept my pecker up and continued to fish. Then on one drop to a wreck, my weight hit the bottom and in the blink of an eye I was snagged and my rod had snapped! No time to let line out, shout for Allan, just a broken brand new built rod........... devastated was not the word. Not helped by a self styled comedian who piped up "It looks like a Sonik now!!"

As you can imagine the enthusiasm drained from my very being and my day was a disaster. Allan gave me a rod and I battled on to get another Cod and a Ling. Home now and still gutted. I need a new hobby!

Oh the caravan park flood warning? That was Lynn pishing herself laughing! :(

Wow! What a nightmare you've had Mark, don't despair, most of us seem to get one of those days at least once. I've lost rod and reels over the side by just taking my eye off the ball for a couple of seconds:(
Saw jfk2 heading out the piers at 7-30am this morning as i was just approaching after launching from Cullercoats.
At least you caught fish.
I have 3 sonik boat rods for a few years now without any problems, so you were just unlucky.

Unlucky Mark.

Get yourself a Maxximus, even Bert needs the help of a 300lb dolphin to snap one.

Don't

the are utter ****e

we have bought 6 of the newest blue and white ones and have snapped 2 of them already.
The rings are also atrocious.
And they show signs of corrosion already

Letting your rod dangle over the side with the weight like in the photo aint going to do it ant good !
Thats if it was your rod !
Apart from that unlucky with the snapped rod i know exactly how you feel !
and well done on not blanking:D

We've bought at least 6 (Ive got 3) and they are all fine.

I suppose they are like women, don't treat them right, they snap. :D

This is a good enough endorsement for me:

You might be right that they had small damages before by negligent care or bad storage.

However...the build quality is very poor and the rings/guards break too easy. I also do not like to see corrosion on 6 months old sea-boat rods.

The action does not match the label, we have the stronger variant and struggle with sinkers over 8 oz because the tip is far too floppy and thin.

However, if one catches a fish, the solid carbon does the job beautifully.

Two rods snapped the tip of after totally routine use and we put new tip guards on it. Those "shortened" ones have a very nice action.

Overall, considering all those problems, the fragility and the high price, I personally cannot recommend this rod to KAYOS

If you look at the photo I was holding the shad with the fish on it. If a 10oz weight dangling on a rod might snap it, then it must be a sh*t rod! :)

Anyway it snapped in a second as soon as it snagged the wreck, no time even to loosen the line. Not happy!

Get in touch with the manufacturer Mark, it shouldn't snap that easy.

I know Keith, but I bought it second hand last year. It worked fine last Summer, just one of these things I suppose. I was gutted that I had just got it back after being rebuilt, I loved the look, yet only had it for 2 hours!

I hope my TLD is just bearings and can be fixed.

Oh well onwards and upwards, more trips to come, holiday not over yet!

unlucky mark, sounds like a nightmare of a day.

if you have any more boat trips planned while your down ive got a spare rod and reel you can use if you need it, the rods a 40-80lb ugly stik, that'll take some snapping :D

onto the maxximus rods, i got one a few months ago after keithb recommended them, i love it, very light and strong and its great fun when you get a fish on. as with anything that goes near salt water it gets washed as soon as i get home, hopefully it will last years if looked after properly.

Thanks very much for the offer Tony that is so kind of you, but I have Lynn's rod and reel here too, so I will be OK. Also I couldn't possibly risk borrowing a rod and reel, as I would be too afraid I broke them too! :(

I do need to think about buying a proper new rod for the future, it's the way to go and I do like the look of the Maxximus. :red:

pleased you have a back up plan mate, you might catch more fish with lynn's "lucky" rod and reel ;)

I was out from Amble on Dave Builths Upholder on Wednesday and one of the lads on board had his rod snap in half. The rod in question was a brand new Sonik which the lad only bought a few days earlier. Seems like Sonik are building crap rods again.
