I'm looking to buy a new for for rougher ground! Any advice.

Kenny stay clear of Ron Timpson IMHO. Keep your eyes on the for sale section on here, there'll be loads of lads selling up after the poor winter

With that budget you've got at the minute I would just persevere with what yav got instead of upgrading gradually, yer far better off saving yer dosh up and getting a better rod later (Greys, zippo, century etc.). To me it makes financial sense mate. I've got a foolish mate who keeps buying crap rods which fu*k up after a few seshes and if he'd just hung fire and got a decent one it would have cost him less in the long run. I just think you get what you pay for, usually, in my opinion anyway.

So what do you think of the Ron Thompson Axe? Like I said I'm gettin some saying they're spot on and some not.

Never seen a one let alone used one but have read more good reports on here than bad ones, never read any about them snapping or out like that so might be worth a shot. Why not ring around and find a shop with a one in and go and give it a reccy.

Kenny the RT Axe is a cracking rod for the rocks mate. I bought 2 of these when i started out and loved them.
They are ok for the beach aswell but they are a stiffer rod and hard to bend when wanting distance.

Honestly i have had loads of rods now and the one i find best at the moment is the Mk 3 Apollo. The one mentioned before is in great condition and a total bargain at £100.

I have got 2 if you want to try 1 out but i love it and most lads who have used them do too!

There are loads of good rods come up for sale on here if that's not your cup of tea so just keep looking in.

Like Phil says some lads have had a bad season and are selling up so you might see a lot of rods coming up for sale soon.

Buy a used rod and if it doesnt suit sell it on for very little loss or even a profit!

Buy a new rod and its £££'s down the drain.

One mans loss is your gain!!! I buy most of my rods this way.

I would second the mk3 appollo , excellent rock rod but also good allrounder, i use one myself along with zzippy m427s.

RT axe is good for the money but not exactly refined!

Another good rock rod you might get on well with is a century crest, you might be able to cast this a bit better than some out and out rock rods as its more thru action.

Also keep your eyes open for an AFAW big beach, it will easily handle the rocks and does bend so you will probably improve on casting distance.

only prob with buying second hand there is no guarantee but thats a chance you take.

just give the rod a good look at , there are some very good deals on these forums and lots of swapping gets done.

dont rush, its the end of the season and you have plenty of time to look around. even if you intend to fish the rock marks in the summer, you still have until mid june. have alook in a few tackle shops and this will give you a good idea of what rods are about and there price new. also its worth a trip to greys at alnwick, they sometimes have some great deals on new rods, got my appollo mk3 there last year for little over £100.

Apollo mk3 13 foot heavy ground rod. Excellent condition & used no more than half a dozen times.
Reason for selling, last twice used have had shoulder pain next day, too stiff for an old git like me.

Final Reduction to £100.

MATE THIS IS ON BSA A WUD GET THIS FOR THE MUNY HE IS AKING FOR IT, ITS A REET BARGIN

agree with that - the gear you've got is good for what's about at the minute IE Flatties and other smally type stuff

Take your time and also buy what you can afford - don't get suckered in to the mentality that you have to spend £400 on a rod and anything less is therefore sh** - it's what you do with it and how you apply the knowledge that counts...;) (not that that ethos helps me much :D)

The RT Axe' is a great out and out rock rod - but personally I'd be looking for an all rounder - Greys and Soniks are very good options as any seconds tend to fall nicely in your price range...don't discount second hand gear because you can pick up some real bargains
