Horden 20/10/2012

Had a few hours down Horden last night, more in hope than expectation given the conditions. Got down there just after 5pm to find the beach already busy but managed to find a decent size gap in the vicinity of White Rock and got settled in.

Things were very quiet for the first couple of hours, even when the sun went down it was still staring at stationary rod tips and this was the case until HT at 7:40pm. Then as the ebb kicked in the sea rats arrived and from then until I packed in at half nine it was a fish a chuck. In the end I stopped wasting my lugworm and ended up just using some manky old Mackerel for bait and I was still pulling them in sometimes two at a time.

One thing I did notice was that especially the better fish (I had a couple 35cm plus) were in very poor condition, long skinny things like this one:

Finished the night with 8 fish and could have had more if I'd botherd to stay. Didn't see much else caught; lads walking past me from further up the beach said it was poor. The lad next to me did however get a nice Thornback just around sunset. Impossible to guesstimate the weight but I'd say about 4lb - 6lb which was probably enough to win him his match.

Baits used were lugworm and Mackerel and all the fish came at range, mostly to Mackerel (though the better fish took lugworm). Got about 30 lug left so will probably be on a pier somewhere tomorrow evening drowning the leftovers :D

hiya mate, I have to agree with you i have had a few whities lately from some of the hartlepool piers and the larger fish are in terrible condition very thin indeed. I was going to try hordan my self later on today but not sure now reading this report :( but at least u had fish stew and the whities saved the blank

regards andy

You'll have been fishing right in front of the party that seemed to be going on up on the banks there then. Who would ever have thought that Horden would be the rave capital of East Durham :D

The Whiting in and around the Tyne are massive at the moment.... had two over 40cm the other night and were fat as hell..... tasty too :D
