after not havingmuch luck the last few days i decided to use some leftover bluey some runnydown that was sat in the fridge from the night before...i sat of to my usual mark horden, and with a forecast of westerly winds , was hoping for a few whiting. i decided i was going back to basics tonight ..no fancy rigs , simple 3 way swivel rig with a grip lead ...upon arriving at at the mark which was busy but not as busy as last night. i set up on the beach baited up my first cast and had a chat with bowsey1 who was on his way back ..had a good chat about gear / baits etc and how 3 geniuses who had a big fire on the beach were catching cod steadily on squid with their telescopic rods whilst a lot of the 'experienced anglers were having a tougher time just marvellous..the one bait i dont have SQUID!anyway first 3 casts ...nothing... then a big birdie on the 525 ....great ... .A change of reels and as i was picking up my rig box i saw some squid bound with elastic in the sand ...sod i`ll give it a go and then i saw some peeler in foil ... great i`ll lash that on too cant grumble when theres free bait on the floor . i set up for big hit and yay another birdie ! i sat to unpick the nest and after a few minutes i felt my a tug . i thought it was probably the excess line trapped under a rock etc but decided to wind in anyway when i felt a decent weight on the end. ...great more seaweed. but nope it was to be my best cod of the year weighing in at 3lb 6oz on the scales

caught on free bait and lip hooked as well. after i unhooked it it spat out a 6 inch rockling and a whole squid and when gutting it its stomach was full of squid. ! any other time the squid would have been no good i reckon. anyway im buzzing to say the least especially since it was unexpected. bring on friday !

Well done mate, seems fishy baits are doing the business at the moment.

Feeling a bit envious, I've not been out for weeks. Combination of moving house and being stowed off at work. Hoping to get out once or twice before the new year, I'll drop you a pm if I do and I'm heading over Horden way.

As for the casting distance Horden's a funny old beach. As a lad I saw plenty of cod come in from no more than 30 yards out; mind you in those days the pit was still open, the water (and the beach) was black and you had to spend half the night dodging the Land Rovers and Bedford trucks of the sea coal lads

I have been using squid loads last few times I have been out and with no luck-just goes to show funny old game fishing. Well done on your cod.
Mick.

whilst thats a possibility i personally think the squid made a difference as the lads about 30yds from me were all catching on squid alone. i also had a chuck with plain peeler (i found 2 last night ) and that didnt produce (altho iwas hoping it did, tis a funny old game this fishing like ...
