Gilkicker Point, Hampshire 20/04/2013

Well after surviving the wedding (and the subsequent hangover, which might have been a lot worse if not for the pain of paying £4.20 for a pint of Guinness :o) Saturday night saw me heading for one of my old stomping grounds in the Solent, Gilkicker Point in Gosport. The plan had been to get a couple of sessions in while I was away but 30mph westerly winds put paid to any plans to fish on Thursday so this was to be my only session of the trip.

When the wedding was planned I was quite looking forward to this trip, at this time of year the fishing should be really kicking off down there with Bass, Plaice, Thornback Ray, Spotted Ray and Smoothhound pups the main targets along with the ubiquitous Pouting, Dogfish and Poor Cod. Alas the prolonged spell of cold weather has completely knacked the fishing down there (as up here) and with water temperatures well below what they should be for the time of year I wasn't overly hopeful.

My chosen mark was Gilkicker Point in Gosport at the eastern end of the Solent. Owing to inconsiderate wedding planning the fishing had to coincide with totally crap tides and even worse a HT at 8pm so still in daylight. This meant 'kicker was the only real choice - it is a mark that offers very deep water close in, a very strong tide rip making it only fishable of tides of 4.2m or less and can also fish at any stage of the tide.

With the sun shining I got to my mark nice and early armed with a pound of ragworm (which cost the princely sum of £11), some Bluey and a packet of Sandeels. After trekking across the golf course and then over a bit of shingle I got to my spot almost on the point and just to the west of Fort Gilkicker

Rigs were two hook clipdowns, size 1/0 or 4 hooks baited with rag or bluey and a long paternoster rig 4/0 pennel hooks and Sandeel in the vain hope of a Ray. As expected things were very very quiet during daylight, it was though a lovely afternoon on the beach with lots of water traffic to watch:

The view over the Solent to Ryde on the Isle of Wight:

The view west towards Stokes Bay and Browndown:

To be honest the pictures are the most interesting bit of this report. The fishing was totally crap, not a single bite during daylight. Things did pick up very slightly after it got dark around 9pm, first fish on the beach was a pin Whiting followed shortly by a Poor Cod that did a good job of trashing my trace:

A couple more pin Whiting came in and then I got a Pouting at range:

One more Pouting came to a Sandeel on a 4/0 pennel dropped 10 yards out in the hope of a Bass and by midnight I had had enough. 6 fish (3 Whiting, 2 Pout and a Poor Cod) was a very disappointing return, this venue should have thrown up a lot more but given the recent weather it was not to be. Still at least I got to witness a lovely sunset over Fawley Refinery and got another couple of species points for the 2013 hunt

Great report and supurb pics. That photo of the sunset is something special and would not look out of place in the pages of Sea Angler. That steep shingle beach reminds me of Chesil and is getting me excited as I will be there in a couple of weeks time. It's a pity the fish weren't there to play but at least you got a couple of points Stewart. Nice one. A great read.
£4.20 for a pint of Guiness is criminal !

Nice report, love the picture of the sunset over Stokes bay to the power station alround Calshot/Lepe . I have fished it many times and caught my PB shore cod from there. I used Alans Marine tackle shop back in the day, I know he sadly passed away a few years ago I guess Nicky is running it now. This time of the year normally you would be hitting the submarine blocks at Southsea for plaice. Lived in Portchester Fareham, Gosport and Stubbington, guess what my Dad did.
You mentioned Browndown that brings back memories of the ray fishing must pay a visit again soon the fishing can be awesome in the solent and and surrounding area just on species alone.

Looks a beautiful spot to spend some Fishing time, catching must have been a bonus? :)

There are some lovely marks in the Solent. Cod fishing is pretty much non existent but from March through to November it can be superb starting with the Plaice and Rays, then the Black Bream and Smoothhound and finishing with the Sole. Only problem is the tons off weed you end up pulling in, sometimes it's enough to make it unfishable and it is one thing I certainly don't miss having moved back home.

Browndown was one of my favourite marks when I lived down there (along with my local beach Eastney) but with a hangover I just couldn't face the yomp along the shingle to the mounds. It was bad enough doing the short walk to 'kicker

good report and pics m8 looks a canny beach with that steep shingle with all them species you mentioned it's a pity you didn't touch out looks like everything is going to be set back a month or so with that long cold spell we've just had

I love Chesil, it is a great beach that can throw up literally anything on its day. I've had Mackerel and Cod in the same session and know of plenty of double figure Conger as well. If the weather stays good it could be spectacular down there in a couple of weeks as everything that has been held back because of the cold spell hits the beach at once. Will definitely be worth hitting the Portland end for a Black Bream as I doubt there will be many of them registered in this years species hunt ;)

Nice report, hard lines on no biggies but atleast you caught. I'm hitting the IOW in august and hoping for a raymond:)

Don't just focus on the Rays, August can see some excellent Bass fishing whilst the Sole fishing can be superb as well as Smoothhound from the Solent IOW beaches. And if you have time to kill in Portsmouth while waiting for your ferry I can heartily recommend a pub called the Hole in the Wall on Great Southsea Street especially if you are in to real ales or real cider ;)

Fished Browndown few months back against a team from SAMF. it was shocking. Fished Hampshire three times now. Total was 1 Bass 1 Mackeral and about 6 pin whiteys, locals are blaming the Trawlers which could be seen going backwards and forwards all day.

The Hole In The Wall Public House, Southsea

Sounds like a plan mate. One of the very few things I miss about living in the south is Dark Star beer, absolutely brilliant brewery but almost impossible to find their beers away from the south coast. If they have any on and you call in there they are definitely the ones to try :)

Yeah I fancy trying along that end as I've only ever fish the west end of Chesil. I will probably give Ferrybridge a shot and a bream would be great. Recent reports suggest Abbotsbury might be worth a try for a smoothound and I am hoping for a few species from my usual haunts Burton Bradstock, Cogden etc My main target would be an early season bass on a lure but the water temp is probably going to be too cold for that.
