Fixed Spools and Braid

Morning all,

I've realized I need to bring my gear into the 21st Century and have noticed that the days of multipliers and 40lb line from the rocks seems to be a thing of the past for some people, with big fixed spools and braid being the go to choice.

It's something I'm giving consideration to, but had a few questions before I blow my hard earned:

- Which model reels are people opting for? I've heard Penn Spinfisher mentioned once or twice...presumably Shimano are high up the list of preference?

- What kind of and breaking strain braid is being used?

- Are people using a heavy mono or braid leader, if so what breaking strain?

- How are people avoiding the braid cutting their fingers to the bone when power casting? I've seen those breakaway release mechanisms, are people using these?

Sorry in advance for all of the questions, any feedback appreciated.

Cheers

spinfisher with 53lb powerpro and a 100lb whiplash leader is what I use.you will probs get different views on braid b/s and leaders though
I use a gardner casting clove ,have the reel low on the butt
works for me ,I use a zipplex m427 hi-flex with the spinfisher and your welcome to have a cast with them to see what you think

I have a Spinfisher and I use 50-65lb braid and 90-100lb leader when fishing on the rocks. I have 30lb braid on the shallow spool which I use from beach etc but I tend to use my technium from the beach or pier etc. I use T1000 in the rough and the braid and fixed spool is amazing with that but also it's great on my T900 and also my tip tornado sport. I use a breakaway cannon when casting but if I'm snagged I use a piece of wood to wrap the braid around.

thanks for that link, enjoyed reading it.personaly been using the same setup, possibly last 7-8years @ cant fault it.just my opion mind.

Thanks for the feedback lads. I've heard the Penn Clash (6000 and 8000) models have excellent solid brass gearing and are up to the job also.

I'm still tempted to stick to what I know for now. Something about having a bit of stretch just doesn't seem that much of a bad thing.....

I've got the chance to get hold of an M427SU but I'm concerned about it being too stiff in the event that I do give braid a go, what do people think?

I've only ever used mono on the rough ground and been ok. I see your point having no give in setup you could pull hooks out of the fishes mouth easily, also is it difficult pulling for a break using heavy braid and leaders

I cut up the butt of an old rod and have a length of carbon from it about 10 inches long. Loads better for braid in snags.

With the lack of stretch in braid, when I've snagged and pulled... Often only with just the rod... The mono on my trace has snapped at some point. Every now and again you need to pull a snag free ... A priest if you carry one or a very short but of wood or old rod like Mick said will do the job.

15ff k2 and spin fisher with 50lb braid and 90 lb braid leader.use it everywhere it's brill!!!
Lose very little tackle compared to mono.....don't need glove or cannon with heavy braid leader not had one cut!
If pulling g out snag I use length copper pipe with tape around d it...usually get everything back...may need change hook
