Fish eat fish

At the back end of last year the NE commercials were given an extra quota for whiting....this raised a question of how would it affect the winter fishing. Would the cod suffer due to lack of food.

An interesting comment was made by a fisheries scientist. It is reckoned that the whiting eat far more cod than cod eat whiting!

The explanation was that the whiting prey on juvenile cod and eat loads of them. Then when (and if) the cod get larger they prey on the whiting. So in theory far from damaging the cod stocks the decimation of the whiting would be good for the survival rates of juvenile cod.

Just as a matter of interest has anyone else noticed a lack of whiting this spring ?

One point to note for those after that PB....a 2lb cod wont have a go at at 2lb coalie...you just need the patience to sit and wait while all around you are catching :)

Dave, we`ve not had a whiting on board this year !.....................

been mentioned on each trip but still to no show ( not that we WANT a whiting, however still interesting)

There's definately less whiting around now than a few seasons ago when we were plagued with them in the boats. It seems that pouting (blegs) are now everywhere.

Thought that may be the case.

What happened was towards the end of last year the commercials complained so much about not been able to catch cod due to lack of quota the government suddenly found an extra quota for whiting in the NE which was available for "lease". I was told at the time very few were likely to take this up due to the poor economics of buying the right to catch fish of low resale value.

I will try get some figures on the actual number of tonnes that were leased as it does seem odd there is an almost total lack of our beloved whiting ;) Wonder what the consequences are on the food chain in the long term.

Cheers
Dave

As we discussed on our trip last week Dave...not a single whiting from shore or boat in 2009 for me this year.

I mean i dont like the species but its a nice fish to take the kids or family members out on the sand banks just off shore, set of daylights with 2/0 hooks tipped with mackerel and everyone is happy.

Last year out of the ling i kept..i would say i cant remember one that gutted that was not loaded with whiting bits..see how they doing since its main food source has been hit hard.
