It was a first for me, breaking a passage through the ice to get out of Amble marina yesterday!
Fortunately, the ice was very thin towards my pontoon, but I still took it carefully as I didn't want to scratch the boot-topping. There was more floating ice too in the harbour. Once clear of the harbour, Oli and I headed south, not really sure where to go. The water was coffee-coloured, and visibility was less than a foot, and we had plenty of different frozen baits, so uptiding was the name of the game, but after several fruitless attempts, we tried an inshore wreck, but that didn't yield anything. All the same, it was still a lovely day, with sunshine, blue skies and virtually no wind, and looking over to the snow-covered Cheviots it felt good to be afloat.
It came close to being my first ever blank, but a solitary pout saved my blushes. This time of year is always hit or miss, but if it isn't too windy later in the month we'll try again.
