This Comp was the first of the year and was fished around the British Airways Carpark area on the Tyne, between 10am and 2pm on Sunday 19th February 2012 on a small rising tide, with a strong cold westerly wind running down river.
11 Anglers turned up,which included a lady and junior member.
The fish were slow to show at the start of the Comp, but as the tide began to run, most Anglers were soon registering bites.
Young Thomas Woodcock was the first to register a fish, a small flounder which was soon followed by Angela Foster, pulling in a treble shot of two flounder and a small whitey.
Mid Comp the scorer was kept busy as most anglers found the fish with Angela again pulling in a treble shot.
Old Billy Huscroft thought he had the Specimen fish in the bag when he landed a nice 34 cm Flounder registering 48pts, then Ian Ainsley had a small tap which he let develop into a constant pull, upon reeling in,a lovely plump 43 cm clean Flounder was landed, which had taken Rag/Bluey on the bottom hook. This single fish alone registered 100pts on the score chart. After length/weight conversion, fish is estimated to be 2lb 5oz.
The lads were soon drawn to Angela, who seemed to be struggling with a bit of weight showing on her rod, was it debris from the River or even a third treble shot. No, as she got it to the edge of the jetty and half way up, hanging off on one of her hooks was a cracking SEA TROUT estimated to be between 3 to 4 lb, But thanks to Kev Woodcocks Fladdon hooks, which Angela was using, the Prize Fish never made it to the shore and nose dived back into the murky waters from whence it had came. Ragworm was the bait.
With the top of the tide arriving, the bites eased unlike the Cold wind.
FULL RESULT
1. Ian Ainsley 9 fish for 171 pts
2. Martin Willis 3 fish for 102 pts
3. Billy Huscroft 4 fish for 89 pts
4. Angela Foster 6 fish for 62 pts
5. Peter Chadwick 5 fish for 48 pts
6. Derek Sirret 2 fish for 46 pts
7. Alan Morris 1 fish for 32 pts
8. Kev Woodcock 2 fish for 30 pts
9. Thomas Woodcock (9yrs) 1 fish for 5pts
Joint last with no fish was Dave Woodcock(father of Thomas)
And Mr Mick Dunn who retained the Mexican Ell Blanco Hat AGAIN
ALL FISH RETURNED ALIVE AFTER MEASURED AND SCORED USING SAMF SCORING CHART.
SOUR NOTE, was the one cyclist, of the hundreds to pass the Comp, who knocked one of the Anglers rods from the railings which resulted in it flipping over and into the River mud. Luckily it went over like a javelin and stuck straight into the deep mud undamaged. It was retrieved with a lot of care.
