Disappointing Whitley Bay beach

Fished yesterday evening, 20/01/2015 for 2.5 hrs around low water on the little gulf to the right side of the bar - nearly in the middle of the beach.
I had good expectations until I saw the sea has come down flat. In the end I got 2 little codlings and 1 rockling (I started too close to the rocks). All so small I did not even bother measuring them and immediately sent back to grow.

Overall a nice evening out but I expected more. Tried lug, bluey and mussels in various combinations and captured both codlings on lug and mussels.

Was anyone else here on the forum there? I am interested to see if you did better and I was a complete disaster or if the beach wasn't fishing as I have just restarted and want to build experience.

I was a bit further south that night on the Pipe - could see the odd light on the beach. The thing with Whitley beach is that is fairly shallow, composed of sandbars, rocks & gullies with a reef over the back, where the fish tend to lurk when it's flat. Not very far offshore, but unfortunately out of range - however they're quick to come in when the sea lifts (as happened on sunday - the sea lifted over the course of the afternoon and plenty of fish were caught sunday & monday evenings) but they're just as quick to leave when the sea drops.

When it has gone flat, you're better off heading either north or south, to the likes of St Mary's Island, where you can fish off the front (next to the post) into some deeper water and a bit of tide, or the rock edges around Hartley where a few fish (often a better one too!) could be lurking in the kelp. On the south side you've got the rock edges along the Pipe Skeers, Table Rocks & Crawleys, Crab Hill etc. - again with deeper water and some mixed to rough ground & kelp to fish in.

Gary :)

Thanks a lot Gary! Quality advices here! As I only recently moved up here and restarted fishing I don't have the experience to know where to go. :)
Next time I'll ask here in the forum if someone wants a buddy for the evening. :) I am quite flex to travel but not too comfortable to fish rock marks alone when I dunno the place!
