The forecast promised light winds and occasional sunshine. And the morning was just like that, apart from a residual swell rolling in from the east. And lots of rainbows as showers passed through. The afternoon was a different story as the swell built up. Newbiggin buoy recorded it as 1.6m, but it felt to us that the waves were bigger, especially as the wind picked up and gave us a chop to contend with, in addition to the swells.
Anyhow, the fishing was okay. Not as spectacular as in previous weeks, mainly because of the small tide and the up/downs of the big rollers, which is a shame as the water clarity is still amazing. Maybe as much as 15 feet, which is what we occasionally get in settled summers. And the fish are clearly around, but a bigger tide would encourage them to feed more aggressively.
Oli and I again chose to stay local to Amble because of the limited daylight hours, and we motored down to Cresswell. Apart from the small tide, it was quite pleasant when the sun did shine. There was a steady stream of codling, both on and off the reefs. I had about 30 codling, 3/4 of which were nicely-conditioned fish in the 1-2lb bracket, with the rest between 2lb and 3.5lb. Oli, using his homemade lures found the water clarity ideal and he logged over 40 codling. His best pollock of the day was smaller than our last session, at 5lb, but we both had around a dozen smaller pollock. The coalies were there too, but not in such great numbers as before. We each had around 15-20. They seemed to like white hokkis as I found out. In the photo, there is a double shot and you can see how gin-clear the water was.
