Crab traps

Sea weed may well grow on them. This doesnt mean there not causing pollution. There an eyesore and not natural to the sea. They will not rot away and wil be there for ever.

So what is the difference between tyres and the artificial reefs that are being constructed all over the world. I know of planes and warships being used and they will be there forever. Can somebody please tell me where all these eyesores are cause I have yet to see any? I know where some are, in parts of the river that most folk would never choose to go so what is the harm in providing a habitat that the crab find acceptable ....oh yeah somebody might make money out of it. Not easy money by the sound of it but I for one buy bait and so do all of us on this forum so that bait comes from somewhere, so does the shoes on our feet, meat on our plate etc. Are you totally sure that the supermarket that sold you your dinner has done everything in its power to protect the environment when its making it's profits. Personally I am more concerned about people digging indiscriminately at Boulmer etc , turning over rocks in rockpools and wrecking the ecosystems in them because they dont put them back as they found them. It strikes me from reading this thread that the people who use tyres for crabbing do all in their power to make sure that the environment is ideal for the crabs - and so they would as its in their best interests to do so.

This whole thread got me thinking and anyone that wants to spend 5 mins googling through the environment agency will see that, they are already aware and watching the situation and studies are being to done to look at the impact of crab trapping. In many estuaries there are now byelaws. Not be long before the tyne etc gets the same.

quote from an initial investigation covering tyne to berwick by the environment agency:

"Intensive recreational and commercial bait collection of lugworm, ragworm, mussels, crab, welks and periwinkle poses potential threats to marine communities in intertidal areas and disturbance to wintering birds. These include over collection for commercial purposes in the
form of collection from rocky shores, boulder turning, trampling and removal of prey for birds and disturbance to birds. Additional consequences may include remobilising contaminants locked in the substrates, navigational problems, digging conflicts with wildfowlers."

- 'potential threat', 'remobilising contaminants'

so they are aware its not as innocent as you all seem to think.

Mark,

This is echo's of what happened in the NESFC region.

Hull university did a survey of the river and commented about the amount of traps. This was picked up as a point of discussion saying that the river could not support it and the commercials proposed a crab collecting ban . fortunately Dr Nigel Procter...aka doc...had evidence to the contary and the day before I spent a day shark fishing with him he was at a meeting to discuss this. Fortunately for us he managed to get the proposal thrown out because he had evidence that crabs are plentifull and trapping them has no effect on numbers.

The frightening thing is that if a bylaw had been passed that day it would have prohibited crab collecting up to south shields based on a survey done in HUll!!

We dont realise how lucky we are to have people like Nigel to speak up for us as totally unpaid supporters.

I wonder why he never comes on this forum any more? ( I know the answer to that question but would leave it to nigel to say why)

Cheers
Dave

lmfao ne bait collectors have gota terrible reputation over here on the west coast and scotland and now you even slagging yourselves off.love it.

re TRAPS

re TRAPS

I used to have traps in the Wear & i don't think people realize just how much work goes into setting traps and keeping them set.
On occasions i would turn up to do my traps, only to find someone had done them late the night before & walked on the tyres leaving them upended
(& some washed away) meaning i got no crab & had to spend ages reseting them.
If i had caught them they would NOT have received a warning !
The lad who had traps just up from me waited in the bushes with a baseball bat a few times but did not manage to catch them.

Marty, That's whole point Mark is trying to get over I think, it's rediculous to attack someone with a bat over a few crab that don't actually belong to anyone. All that does is give us anglers a bad name.

I certainly don't advocate the use of violence to "protect" one's traps and I also hope that no-one thinks I want a ban on the collection of crabs 'cos I don't. What I think is fair is that the crabs have a chance of survival and / or getting away, unlike tyres which are easily emptied and encourage over collection.

they Tyne and the Wear?? If your from one, where does that leave anyone that wants to collect crabs from the other then, and worse still, baseball bat! FFS, it appalls me to think that anyone could advocate that.

Is a potential life sentence worth it for a few sodding crabs

Aye Red rock some of the lug diggers who descend on Boulmer to dig every tide are on the dole and sell them on to make their beer money. Some of their cars are un taxed and un insured too.
I've recently come back from the west coast were I collected my peelers for the winter. I got 100 which will last me the whole winter. Other lads are over there collecting over many tides for the whole duration of the crabs peeling.
If a byelaw was brought in to protect the crabs which prevented me from going where I go for my crabs then I would have to respect that in the name of conservation.

I'm just pleased i can collect enough crab without using tyres or robbing someone elses crabs from there tyres, did'nt realise Baseball Hats would be involved,i would'nt be able to sleep at nights, whatever next
