Catch report "Grace" 01/10/11,one to remember,

We set off at 7am and headed to a couple of local wrecks but found it hard going. We decided to head North to a couple of banker wrecks but the fish were scarce and we even struggled to locate any Mackerel. Just before slack water, we came inside to drift the rough ground and immediately our fortunes changed with fish coming to the boat at regular intervals. Our quota was reached in early afternoon and we threw back perhaps a dozen decent Cod although none were into double figures. Just before close of play I hooked something very heavy that I struggled to wind up and I assumed it was an old lobster pot or perhaps a length of rope. When I got it to the surface it turned out to be a large Monkfish of approx 25lb and when we got it into the boat it became quite aggresive and we had to avoid it's jaws because it grabbed anything that moved. I tried to remove my pirk by allowing the fish to bite onto the wooden priest/knocker but it swallowed the priest and then grabbed a newly landed Codling that happened to be nearby.
I'm sure we would have thrown it back if we could have got the hook out in a timely manner but it wouldn't let us near so it's skinned, filleted and shared out amongst the crew. IMG00182-20111001-1623.jpg

angler fish and monkfish are the same mock scampi in the resturants for those who believe they get scampi the real thing (not)

That's a cracker mate you don't see or hear of many angler fish getting caught around here ! the monk is a total different fish (Angel shark) .. the trawlermen in the north sea call the angler fish they catch monk fish that's prob where the confusion comes from .

Well done lads....Hell of a fish, (thpechthamin I reckon!!) and still catching strong.....Great day on Sunday too, weather a little against us but still loads of laughs and loads of fish....

I would,nt have let it go. Tea for a few weeks for me. One of our lads caught one out if Hartlepool in a compo. Got heaviest fish was was a minnow compared to yours--fish of a lifetime.
Best wishes Mick.

I don't think we should underestimate the signifigance of this catch and ok it's a serious fish that would cost as small fortune at any fish wholesaler but maybe it's a fish that's starting to frequent our waters. I heard the JFK landed a smallish Monkfish earlier in the season so there are positive signs that this species are moving into our waters.
Add this catch to the Tuna caught this season in the Salmon nets, the Shark sightings and increased Dolphin activity etc and it bodes well for the future. It's a fact that a small degree of global warming may benefit the Northern hemisphere in terms of agricultire and fisheries etc so bring it on.
