Carp on the fly rod

Things generally accepted as Flys (arguably)

Natural or imitatative flies represent all stages of the lifecycle of a number of freshwater creepy crawlys, things that live under and on top of the water or in trees or grass up your nose etc. Nymphs and buzzers and worms and beetles and flys with wings and ............ Lures which most still class as flies represent fry or sometimes just "a thing" to provoke a fish into taking it.

Interesting article lads.
The first carp I ever saw taken on a "fly" was at Farmire, by accident by Johnny McGuigan, from Consett in the early 80s, we were after trout and it took a sedge pupae on the last cast of the day. Weighed 14lb and put up a hell of a scrap. I know when I fish for mullet etc, in the med, its for the fight they put up, and tho they take a white beetle, or eggfly, Im under no illusion other than they think it is bread.
Now as for pike, Id love a go. Sweethope is the place i believe.
But Ill carry on putting whatever I think a fish will take on the end of my fly rod,
and enjoy it.

i actually know why the carp take dog bisciuts where i fish, in one corner where you are not allowed to fish, there is a big oak tree and when the acorns drop at the end of the year you should see the commotion.

Terry - I totally agree, in the instance of catching the carp, I have not fly-fished but I was using a fly rod!!! Bearing in mind that was not my original intention, I was merely waiting for them to take off the top before changing to a sedge.

As for using a 5 weight rod and tiring the fish out - i have never heard such a croc of sh#t in all the years I have been on this site.

To get any fish to the bank, you tire it out. I think if what you say is right surely all C&R trout waters would ban anything under a weight 8?
I know for sure that carp recover better than a trout - If there was any chance of me doing any harm to the fish I would not own a 5 wt never mind use it!

Hiram.A.Biff - I have had a few pike out of the lower loch at sweethope, all taken on black/olive flitz, although mainly jacks, I have seen some huge pike in that lake.

Another good pike fly water is the Derwent Water in Cumbria - I have had some decent fish from the bank and boat up there on the fly although you are limited from the bank.

Cheers

try listening to yourself.

When you fish for carp with a pole. what size elastic do you use.

Try not to get to offensive with your replies, not that it bothers me but the moderators will pull the thread.
