best of the catch 20lb common, unfortunately the photo does not do the fish justice, it had a huge set of shoulders on it, taken on a immitation dog biscuit

was a bit worn out after tackling that beast

Ive never done coarse fishing before never mind catch one on a fly rod, I have seen vidio/tele programmes about carp fishing and they look a really powerful fish.
Good on you for trying out the fly rod, it will probably kickstart other anglers to try their hand at carp with the rod.

I wouldn't mind a bash at that John, the mind boggles thinking of having a toothy critter like a pike on the end of your line.:o

Spike just read the link, fly fishing for carp, then she goes on t o say a lad caught 4 fish on a strike indicator using paste. Easier with a pole dont you think.
Then they started taking dog biscuits.
No mention of a fish being caught on the fly, perhaps her ad should have read come to the Angle lakes and catch a carp on your fly rod using anything other than a fly.

I'm with you on that fella, It's using a fly rod like but that's about it.

I think it was Hiram A who has been caning mullet in the Med on a fly rod using a white foam beetle, maybe with bread as well. Apparently out fishing the locals, fantastic, and sharing his secrets with the young uns. It's a similar thing I suppose but different. Funy old game etc.

Hello Chaps - I think I was the lad in that article. I thought I'd let you know how I ended up fishing with an indicator and paste.

I had fished there all day with my pole and wagger etc and managed a few fish out. There were a few fish cruising near the surface so I decided to nip home and get my light fly rod - 5 weight. Hoping that the fish would come up top in the water I flicked out some dog biscuits - Please bear in mind, as they feed the carp on sinking pellets, the fish naturally do not look up in the water, the need some incentive!

Whilst waiting for the carp to take off top, I stuck an indicator on with some paste and dropped it out over the platform. I managed a few out on that and i have to admit, whilst waiting it was good fun as they do fight like hell!

I managed to get a couple of fish up in the water and take a couple of biscuits off the top - no sooner had I put a sedge on, the wind got up, it started pssing down and that was that!

Do I agree it would have been easier with a pole - of course I do!
Would I have had as much fun - not at all!

Cheers

James you are missing the point.
I have no doubt at all you had some good fun, the point i make is that it is not fly fishing for carp but simply catching a carp using a fly rod.

Why not use a spinning rod or is that because it does not sound as good.

As for fishing that light then you are doing the fish no favours, merely exhausting the fish by taking to long to land.

And before anyone gets on their high horse this reply is in no way meant at having a go at James.

just in case anyone is wondering I was using the immitation dog biscuit as a fly, and fly casting at the fish as in trout fishing, after all a fly is just an immitation of something the fish eats, where a carp learned to eat dog biscuits beats me though, found the fly rod more accurate than trying to cast a lump of bread, dog biscuit etc with a carp rod and sitting waiting for a fish to come along. Will be trying numerous flys next time, agree with Terry if you are going to use baits you may as well use the proper rod for the job. No doubt I will be told an immitation dog biscuit is not a fly.

You want to hear some of the zealots arguing on the flyfishing forums about what does and does not constitute fly-fishing. Personally I feel I am not really fly fishing if I use an indicator (float;) ) but I use them a lot when I'm sick of casting and need a break. For me it's the technique rather than the fly on the end. I think a spinner cast and retrieved with a fly rod can probably be called fly fishing. Just thought about dapping though where does that fit in - I suppose it's dapping when you think about it also trolling is called trolling and not flyfishing.

By the way well done Alan and James

Well Alan surely a fly is .... at the most extreme supposed to resemble an airbourne or hatching insect ,I've watched programmes before where they've used a frog imitation to attract pike and called them flies ?????

Anyway what do I know ,I've not tired anything other that saline fishing ;)
