Braid on Fixed Spool

I've just got a Surfblaster and I'm going to try Braid for the 1st time on the spare spool. What diameter is best for general beach/pier fishing. If I go for 45lb breaking strain as a main line will I need a shockleader? I only usually use 4oz weights.
Do people prefer mono or braid leaders if needed.:question:

45lb straight through will be fine if only over head casting. Protect ur finger though when casting.

I'd still use a shock leader with 45lb just to be safe. 60lb braid leader will be sufficient unless your casting heavier leads than 6oz

I think people should always use leaders for safety as a little nick in your line will cause a weak point

Try 30lb braid with a 60/70lb braided shock leader,it'll fly
If it's a snaggy venue,then go heavier than the 30

I use 66lb straight through in the rough stuff and 40/80 for clean and mixed ground. I find too thin beds in too much.

Cheers for the replies, gonna try 30lb braid with a 50lb mono leader. My thinking is that when I'm handballing a huge cod up a pier wall, the mono wont cut my fingers so much, ha ha

The mono leader will cause you problems. Braid leaders are needed to minimise crackoffs and ring wraps. 30-40 lb braid and 80lb braid leader is a good combo. Will allow you to fish everywhere from smooth to very rough ground. Start to go too heavy and you lose some of the benefits. Heavy braid 60lb and above has its uses but not something you tend to use. You will be amazed what you can do with even the lighter stuff
Just make sure you learn the right knots as the usuals can slip. Also get yourself a finger stall for casting.

I've got 44lb power pro on one spool and and 50lb spectra and 80lb leader on both. Haven't really had chance to use yet but had a cast Monday night and was decent enough but couldn't really tell with it being pitch black and blowing a gale lol

I use50lb braid main line and 80lb braid leader. Cheap as chips from china. You need to have a good knot for the leader when it is tied onto main line.

Thanks again, got my Chinese leader ordered. Also ordered a Breakaway cannon. I'm thinking an Albright special would be good as a leader knot.
