Bluey for cod?

Now lads, was wanting your opinions on using bluey as cod bait? Never tried it myself, tend to use the more traditional baits, crab, mussel, lug etc. Was thinking of giving it a try over rough ground, single or as a cocktail.. Any shared experiences would be useful.. Cheers.

Seems to be the current fad doesnt it? and not just for cod...

Shops seem to be very willing to sell if and recommend it, but would be interesting to see if anyone has caught on it.
Used it for pollock in SW Scotland this year - nothing, lures fished much better.

Bluey or mackerel tied in will often sort out the bigger fish - quite a few lads I know who like their winter pig-hunts up the likes of Newton / Craster / Beadnell wouldn't be without it & it's certainly accounted for some big fish. It'll also work locally, sometimes when there's no interest in lug or crab baits…tie in a bit & it'll help you get one or two out.

Gary :)

its been around awhile . first time i tried it landed a decent plaice from horden on a clear water summers day , always found it to be good bait . cheap as well.

definatly a good bait. my mate alan thain had a 30lb bag one night using only bluey..
he loves it..
I used it often and always had fish with it but no doubles on it YET haha

Very underestimated bait for cod IMO I've had any fair share of nice fish on bluey and mussel baits especially around beadnell seahouses area.

It's just about the only bait you need to fish in norway

Bluey is a top bait for Cod I like to use it from December when the bigger Cod move in to spawn I was converted to it after my first shore fishing trip to Norway its always best to use semi frozen goes like mush when left to defrost.

Had a nice 5lber out of crisps gulley in September on straight bluey. The further north you go the better it seems to fish. Works really well Arbroath area.

only tried it the once on ssp and got a nice coalie tend to use Mackie with rag or lug.
once tried crab sticks :D but a problem trying to keep it on the hook falls apart

great bait had a couple of canny cod from craster on bluey and squid tied to a pennel rig bigger the better mind you it stinks but its a top bait

THE bait for ray's,a lot better than macky when tipping your werm when ytin bashing.macky's too mushy, bluey is a lot firmer n has more oil content.Bluey is a very versatile bait, like mentioned above has tempted sum rite zoo creatures too.Very cheap, shop around but can be found less than £2 for a pk of 3,I only pay £1.85 for a 3pk,so for that money allways have a freezer full, ready for the ray sessions;):).

I agree with hound hunter in that bluey has more oil content than mackerel but I find it mushier so it's best used partly defrosted but if it goes too soft then use whole sections or a long fillet folded/doubled over when targeting bigger fish like cod, pollock etc.
