why arn,t there more backcasters ?

is this a dieing style?

east anglia seems to be where most of the best ones comes why?

It could be an image thing? everyone is always reading about how the top men pendulum cast and how this is the way to get big distances

It could also be down the rods? As you know there isn't a lot of choice when it comes to backcasting rods

Even in its heyday on the field there were never as many backcasters as pendulum men. Now there aren't as many casters so the percentages could still be the same?

I wonder what the most backcasters at a UKSF event was ?

(I'm not talking about those who have just 1 chuck either)

1999 GP2 - 5 - Dave Vicary, Colin Francis, Phil Gaywood, Kevin Southey & Malcolm Green.

Probably pre 1998 there where more.

Len has all my archive stuff so with a lot of searching he could probably tell where and when the most backcasters were around. I would guess late 70's early 80's because Dave Docwra did well using it to set loads of records and win loads of stuff I think during the early 70's?

Over the years I remember casting with Hylton brighty, Ian Hunt, Howard Grey, terry Houseago, Gary Setchell [best backcasting technique ever no matter what anyone says], Alan Forder, of course the north easts very own Bob Scott and probably a whole host of others who's names evade me at the moment.

I think the most I can remember at any one event would be about 6-8? Colin Howlett would know for certain as he's been around even longer than me!

In my early years the numbers of backcaster was much higher. Most of the casters came from East Anglia Peter has covered some of the top guys, others that regulary featured in the top 10 were John Ellis, Richard Jacobs, Mark Gooch ,Mark Colman, Rex Warren, Paul Hunt, Tony Nutt, (Neil Mackellow cast backcast at his 1st event in 1981),and I used to cast f/s using a backcast style:D :D :D . I am sure that there are several more that could be added to the list.

hi peter i can rememember yourself backcasting at n/e event using a lt bullit i think, has bob scott vanished off the planet now.

i think its a shame not more ppl backcast in competitions
i know there are more then actually go to casting events and most are prob alot better then me

There were 2 Coull, Peter and Paul they cast until 1983/84 I trhink Peter did some articles for one of the mags. and promoted backcasting at the same time.Another very good caster was Paul Lonsdale from Hull.

Ian,

Have you thought of suggesting that an alternative style should be compulsory at UKSF events ?

(i.e. 4 casts preferred and 4 casts alternative)

It would never catch on...
