Ok lads, I will try and keep this as short as possible. The above message was done in good faith and is from a member of staff of the Northumberland Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authority. The lad used his own personnel user name as he is a angler himself, he should have set up an official user tags as an Open and transparent member of staff from IFCA this will happen soon.
Just a little bit of background, some of you have read my ramblings for years over possible threats to our sport/ hobby and indeed attended the meeting at the Bank House Club Newbiggin when the threat of licensing to sea anglers was looming, that meeting helped remove that from the new Marine and Coastal Access Act 2009. As a result of that Act the old Northumberland Sea Fisheries Committee was disbanded and a new organisation was set up 2 and a bit years ago “Northumberland Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authority” along with the Marine Management Organisation who replaced the Marine Fisheries Agency. The Authority is made up of 30% local County Councillors and the remainder MMO appointees from Commercial fishing, Recreational Sea Anglers and Conservation bodies such as wildlife Trust; we also have 3 members from the Environment Agency, Natural England and the MMO. These positions are voluntary and can be applied for, you would be interviewed by the MMO and if successful, would appoint you. This is important for us as RSA because under the new Marine Act IFCAs have responsibility for Sea Anglers and bait collection and they also have the power to make and enforce byelaws.
The Northumberland IFCA is very forward thinking and is currently writing a document to represent a strategy for Recreational Sea Anglers, these are not bye laws or restrictions on our sport/hobby they are evidence if you like to say how many we are in number, how much we spend how important we are socially and as a group and to create a platform for you to express your views on the fishery. Hope this helps.
