Arbroath Trip Day 2

Well lads, after a canny sleep at Dundee Premier Inn, and a hearty breakfast at The Brewers Fayre, with Mick taking advantage of the eat as much as you want, we set off towards Arbroath discussing where to go whilst driving the twelve miles or so.
A few lads off here had pointed us to The Mains of USAN,which although is only a mile further North of my usual spot, I had not been.
We arrived at the farm and parked up next to a field which housed the biggest Bull I had seen apart from my companion. We could see that the dropping tide was exposing a cracking Skeer running out to sea and also leaving a deep pool to its left. We made our way through a few fields and arrived to find that the sea had flattened right off and was almost crystal, opposite from only yesterday, but no we bith thought there's fish here....Wrong two hours of chucking grenade size baits produced not one bite..time for a move, let's go back to the Salmon Farm and try the rock edges...we yomped back to the car and found a canny bloke frOm Lincolnshire unpacking his gear...Owt Lads. Not a thing we said...funny I had a canny bag last night which included a 9lbr...what's the water like...Flat and clear....well I've been coming here for last twenty years and if it is I'm going back to my digs. You need a lump on he says. Jesus, kick us while we down I thought...Anyway we arrived at the Salmon farm and made our way DOWN cliffs to give it a go...not one bite...we tried long, short , backwards and sideways. You name it we tried it. Nowt..it was now bottom water and we knew the lads from The Marine Corp would be soon here to fish their night Comp, so we took it on the chin and decided to return to our previous nights fishing on the ledge towards Bodin Point, we scrambled up the cliffs and I mean scrambled, then walked the distance to our shot before going Down the cliffs onto the ledge, good job the Marines hadn't seen us huffing and puffing up these Cliffs Mick or they'd know we weren't ex SAS ......yer right he said.
Anyway here we go, we will loose gear but at least this is we're the fish were...WRONG
We chucked out cracking baits till 7pm with me getting two bites and Mick getting one bite, which he thought wouldn't come back..reeled in..shouted think I've lost my sinker Ian, oh think I've got a fish, 2lbr lifted on the ledge, WELL THAT'S ME NOT BLANKING IAN. Jesus, if only I'd had a gun..two casts later we packed in, with our minds on a nice 16 oz T Bone back at the Brewers Fayre..
We watched the lads from the Marines headlamps jumping from rock to rock, running up cliffs, down cliffs all searching for a fish in their Cod Championships....it looked like the training was paying off for them lads, like bloody mountain goats Mick said..respect where it's due lads, and cracking bunch of lads, all had time to speak and exchange Crac but was hard going for them..
It just goes to show, doesn't matter where you fish in this Country, the conditions have to be right and I was told this before we went, but hey hoy you gotta be in it to win it.
One point of note is couldn't believe the amount of nets just offshore in the area, maybe this didn't help, I don't know, but good company, good Crac for a few days recharges the batteries..

Excellent report Chut and not a lot more to add.

other than when I mentioned your SAS training I noticed the lads take a step backwards. Before they realised we were just a couple of old duffer retired cops ha ha.

Tight lines ( Mick 1 - Chut 0 - day two)

Cracking report lads.

Cracking report lads.

Great stuff lads, like you say it can be like anywhere else. I've blanked a few times in the 9 years based up 45. However, lads can appreciate the beautiful scenery/terrain and not forgetting the deep gullys and cod grounds.

The lads based up there seem to know the fishing areas very well. Looking on google earth and we have hardly covered any area-looks loads of top dollar spots. Wonder how much it would be for apartment for a week - now that's fishing.
Mick.

Chut was on the SAS for years. Seaham Salvation Army Service head bugle blower. And he's blown a few in his time ;-)

Hi Reg,

Sorry, must have missed your post. The B&B we stay in is in Ferryden. Crail I've been to a couple of times but have only camped on the caravan park at the water's edge (in my younger days and before I realised Rod was claustrophobic lol). Will pm you the addy.

Sounds good to me for B&B but I was fancying a holiday cottage or apartment with a fridge freezer.
You can still pm the number and I will keep it for now Dave.

Cheers Mick.

Mick I stayed at a holiday cottage at auchmithie (some very good marks there) is a few miles north of Arbroath. Stayed last december for 5 days. Was 3 bed roomed, log fire and superb. Right on the cliff and very reasonable price. Will see if I can find the link to it on the internet.
