anyone able to date a old abu 6000??

i have a little red abu 6000 that i dont think has ever been used
its a nice shiny little thing in a leather pouch with original oil and spares bottle
I was wondering if anyone had the expertise to date one of these? i have tried for the last 2 hours but to be honest it started to make my brain hurt trying to understand it all
Its a 3 screw model that post dates the 4 screw which i think stopped production in 1957
the stamp is 057009 could this be it was manufactured in september 57?
the only thing stoping it from being 100% pristine is someone has written there address, postcode etc in big bold black permanent marker on the bottom of the leather case l( i assume incase they lost it:o)
anyone got any tips for cleaning leather?

I prefer to drink my alcohol if possible
My missus said try her nail varnish remover (acetone) but i would imagine that would just eat the leather
By alcohol do you mean industrial alcohol? or good old fashioned Russian vodka?

Industrial alcohol mate. Nail varnish remover works on plastic and doesn't melt it so I would think it would work on leather.
Why don't you try a little bit on it first and see what happens.
 
There is a website that you can stick the ref in and it tells you all about it but i dont remember what it is.. You could always email it to blakdog tackle.. He knows all about abu's

May 1970 thats what the 05 70 means. The end number denotes a revised model. So your reel foot number is version 9 from a reel that originally started to be produced from May 1970.

Here's a link to a web page that explains it. I found this quite a while ago when I was trying to date an old reel. Seems to be pretty difficult to put an exact date on them.

You got it spot on mate, i finally half deciphered the stuff on the website you are talking about
the 9 is the variations that where made from the original
Felt like i was back at school trying to read it slowly and to take it in

For a 43 year old reel it looks like it was born yesterday!
probably a collectors reel, but i am going to use it to death, its still very smooth but the handle looks dinky to the extreme, i couldnt imagine hauling anything of size in on it
The drag is very very tough though

I think its worth keeping for the sake of 40 notes, its only a few pints at the end of the day
I would prefer to get some use out of it
should sit just nice on my penn ppt viper

Keep your reel and cherish it, at one time ABU made the best multipliers in the world. For me it all started to go downhill for them when they teamed up with Garcia.
I have a few old ABU's that I will never part with, daft I know. I wouldn't have a new Ambassadeur given to me......maybe I've been spoilt with the older ones.
Just my opinion though.

I agree with you about the quality going downhill with abu/garcia over the years
I am terrible with keeping gear in good condition, i just seem to scratch and chip stuff (far to heavy handed)
whats the point in putting something on a shelf though? i would rather give it a bit lick, they made them to last anyway

Sorry deanwar, I mean you should use it.......it'll last you a lot longer than the newer ones.

Have to agree, the old models were built like tanks, the newer ones are crap in comparison. Likewise, I have some old Ambassadeurs dating back to 1973, and theyre worth more to me than any of the more modern reels I own.
Use the reel, and enjoy it, safe in the knowledge it`ll last way,way longer than any of the modern stuff :)
