Advice on marks required - NE England/ SE Scotland

Hello everyone

I am new to this forum as in this is my first post although I have been reading for tips and info for a few months now. Hope you can help :)

A bit of background - I live in Berwick and fairly recently got into shore fishing. I have had a bash at a couple of local spots with varying degrees of success. Spittal beach, Cocklawburn beach (Scremerston), Eyemouth and Beadnell. Species so far mostly flounder off beaches but one bass off Cocklawburn, blanked at Beadnell and 3lbs codling (kelpie) at Eyemouth on Saturday past.

I am looking for advice on marks around these areas that should be productive during the winter months? Hopefully for Cod

I fish alone mostly as none of my friends are interested. I cannot understand as I love it! I have ventured out at night once, Beadnell point on the rocks but blanked. This was an impulse trip and I hadn't checked it out in daylight prior to going. Looking for safe (ish) marks if possible. For beach fishing I can only hit 80-90 yards with a cast which I understand isn't great and limits me, I am working on it. Beaches around here are fairly shallow.

My understanding is, and I would also like thoughts on this if you have any, Eyemouth is cracking in summer for Cod but very few fresh run Cod in winter. Which I don't understand!?! :confused: Have read Codling Crouch (Excellent book in my opinion) so know good marks/ tactics for area, just looking forward to warmer months.

Any help or advice on winter marks greatly appreciated and thanks for taking time to read.
 
Hi Berwick and thanks for the plug. Would have thought that the rock ends below the golf course and caravan site at Berwick and then onwards up towards Marshall Meadows would be enough for the winter. I'd leave Eyemouth and beyond until next year.

Cheers for the advice. What is the access like to rocks/ coast at Marshal Meadows? Never been past the hotel itself down that way for weddings and the like.

I am probably up to what you would class as moderate terrain. I have looked at some of the marks you class as difficult in your book, there must be a touch of mountain goat blood in your veins ha! Not for me
 
Used to beat my self up about yards you can cast , but from people i have spoken to and people i have seen ,not many can hit huge yards with a big winter bait . I know i cant , but like to think i can still weigh in a fish or two (unless fishing with you ianandaz lol )
 
Hi berwick a mate and myself hav fished at marshall meadows a few times but the decent down the old path is something to be desired! Not sure if its a winter or summer mark! We fished it autumn time if i remrmber, didnt hav much but its a potentially good mark! As for other places, hav scouted the beach from scremeston downwards and it has potential! If you looking for fishing craic my present boss is opening a new restaurant in berwick and could talk a glass eye to sleep incase you want to ask him anything!
 
Cheers James. I am realistic in my beachcasting aspirations and I am improving. I like rock marks as most of the time its deep water not too far out!

Nice one redtop, what's the restaurant called? I will pop in for a bit of a craic with him. I dont know many people into shore fishing so always good to talk to people who enjoy it. Plus im still learning so any hints or tips are always good! Was in the Greys shop in Alnwick last week and the lads in there were really interesting to talk to.

I have fished Scremeston a couple of times. Flounder mostly and had one bass, its a nice spot. That was a couple of months ago though and during the day. Might give it a go at night soon, worth a chuck
 
The skeers and gullies around newton beadnell and seahouses fish well when there's a sea running in the winter especially during darkness on medium to big tides using lug crab and mussel baits, during the summer months fish they fish best when the sea is flat and the water is clear with crab being the best bait
 
Hi bandit, thank you for the help. Lately I have been fishing big lug and squid combo. I have some frozen peeler, is this still a good bait this time of year?

I have a question about Seahouses that maybe you (or other members) might be able to help me with. Out to sea from the harbour there is a sea wall or similar, is this accessible to fish off?

Also, forgive me as I am relatively new to this, is it a good tactic for big fish to fish fairly short off the rocks and in the gullies or should I be casting further out? In general I mean, I know there are no exact sciences when it comes to fishing

Hi Mr berwick,

With regard to the marks in the book, everyone feels happy within their comfort zone and I'd hate to take anyone beyond that.

Marshall Meadows access is a debatable thing and if it was me I'd ask the locals or walk from the south, but I think the beach and skeers at Berwick are fantastic winter shots and, for someone who always casts less than 100 yards that's where I'd experiment this winter. If you want to look towards Marshall Meadows I'd park at the north end of the golf course and walk north, with or without the rod, as the tide ebbs and just suss the place out. Loads of potential.

Don't know about the breakwater but the skeers in front of the brick hut are canny in the summer try different distances as for the winter I've not had a much of a chance to fish them in the winter months I tend to beadnell or craster area. As for frozen crab it will catch fish all year I've had some good bags even in the summer with frozen sometimes it can out fish fresh, crab and mussel can be a deadly cocktail this time of year

Its gonna be a new italian restaurant called caffe tirreno just tell him patch told you to pop in! Theres loads of places further down the coast , the alnwick clubs always looking for new members!!

I am not sure about Berwick pier Thunderpants. See people fish off it for mackerel in summer but there are, in my experience anyway, very few shore people shore fishing around here. Read another thread about it on here a while back, mixed opinions all in all as I remember.

Does having a big river like the Tweed flowing fresh water into the sea have a detrimental effect on fishing? Salt/ fresh ratio put fish off for example. Don’t know what its like around Tyne so any thoughts appreciated

I wouldn't think the fresh water would have that much effect as the fresh water lies on top of the salt water. I've never notice it have any effect on Roker at all, and sometimes you can see the set from the fresh water over half a mile out.
 
Unfortuneatley Seahouses south pier is now shut to all members of the public with a fixed fence at the base near the old powder house. The sign has some waffle about dangerous tides?! You can still climb onto it though but the harbour master will probably say something. The rocks behind are a good shot on a midling tide. find the first half of the flood in darkness best. obviously a northerly or easterly swell helps. Thinking of giving some shots a go up Berwick way this weekend and the start of next week as I am staying up at seahouses. Always fancied Berwick pier end casting North so determined to try it. like you said you said ive never seen an angler north of seahouses and always had places to myself!!
