A huge inshore cod at last! Wasabi 18Aug

The strangest fishing ever at the moment.

On Sunday we sighed of relief that the fish were back on the wrecks. We did a nice session with 5 anglers on mine and James boat and had a good return with nice cod to 9 1/2 lb and a very nice ling of 14lb fell to James.

Then on Monday a friend from Germany (Manni) and his son (Tim) arrived. Since a few years I told him how good the fishing is here in August and encouraged him to have a try. So he came ! ....and with him arrived the damned southeasterly wind.

Every day we tried a few hours in the morning only to be drifted with 1.5 and more knots over the wrecks.

Everyday we lost lots of sinkers and eventually stopped for some mackerel fishing instead. Met On a Roll and Saphire at sea and all had the same misery.

Today we ventured out on a slightly better forecast...but it was just the same....1.7 knots drift....hopeless.

Manner then asked. me why not trying inshore...and my response was...."it will be sh...e inshore, because the water is green and mucky...

well I said, lets do it. Na Gut vee go! :p

Went to White Stones Rock and I used a 4in Ruby/Custard sidewinder shad in 10 m water....of course it was dead as well.

"Bring your stuff up, we move somewhere else ! I said...and when I reeled my shad up to the boat something enormous hit it....it really felt like a seal...took line several times and I squeeked "Gaff...GAFF!

to the surface came a huge cod and Manner gaffed it after 5 or so attemps! When I later asked him why he took so long the answer was " Did not want to get your rusty gaff spoil the fillets"! GERMANS!

Anyway....the cod looked like that:

everybody was very happy and had a photo tken with it

Manner displaying his biggest for comparism :)

and Timmy

all in all a nice day and we somehow managed 10 cod, a wrasse and about 30 mackerels

Oh yes...and ...at home the cod was weighed on the scales and was just over 8kg or just under 18lb

Something special for an old wrecker to catch a cod of that size in 8m water on a shad !!!

Cracking description of how it all unfolded, brilliant. Just goes to show how many good fish lie between the moorings and the deeper wrecks. Nice one.

Good report mate and its nice to see some good fish come out where you least expect them - that's why it's called fishing i suppose.:thumbup::thumbup::thumbup::thumbup:

I got sent this pic while I was at work. Made my day such a random big catch! Well deserved!! But I think that it's 2 X 18lb ers from the skipper inshore this year? Norbert s carrying good form!

well done Norbert, nice to see some decent fish at last , been very lean times lately. I am sure that there will be some monster cod/ling getting caught soon as they have been keeping a low profile and must be feeding well.
