Hello and Happy Easter, here's a rare freshwater report from me.
I was up at the caravan over the Easter and decided to have a trip to Chatton on Sunday for a few hours. It's only a short drive to Chatton from Seahouses and in 15 minutes or so I could see the three lakes of Chatton set against the snow covered Cheviot Hills.
It was very cold at Chatton and the anglers already there were fishing the bottom lake as the two top lakes were frozen over.
The bottom lake had two airators going and was for the most part ice free, although the "fingers" at the end of the lake were still covered and floating ice made things a bit hard.
Now I should add that I'm not as accomplished at fly fishing as some and with this in mind I made my way past most of the anglers and started to fish up towards the ice, where my poor casting wouldn't be as obvious.
I had lost a good fish here a couple of weeks ago. That fish had took a black and green cats whisker type lure that was recommended to me by an an angler at the lodge so keen to try it again I started with that.
I had a few casts and felt a couple of "tugs" at the lure so I slowed my retrieve down a bit more and was straight into a fish.
Heartened by this I continued with this lure but after an hour or so without a touch I decided on a move and a change of fly.
I moved further round the lake as the other anglers had now left, I also tied on a more conventional white cats whisker and within a few casts I had my second fish. I was now very cold and although I'd only been there for three hours I made my last couple of casts and called it a day.
So I never had a huge amount of fish and there are lots of fly anglers that would be disappointed but I was more than happy and I'm very pleased with how my casting is coming on......I only hooked my coat three times.
It's also nice to be out fishing again as this last year or so has been a hard one for me with very little chance to get out.
