Got down to SSP at 6pm, an hour before high tide, using my new spinning set up - Shimano Vengeance and Penn Fierce 4000 - for the first time, but using it with the float, as I was after a corkwing wrasse and a pollock.
The plan was to fish the second gate area for a corkwing then go down to the blocks and try for a decent pollock, with either the float or to try some fire tail sidewinders.
First hour was a bit slow, with quite a few tiny coleys, about 3 inches long, then on high tide I christened my rod properly, with a fierce rattle and the float getting dragged down, and pulled out a wrasse.
I thought it was just a ballan (might be a male corkwing?), so kept trying for the corkwing I needed for the species hunt. A couple more little coley, then the float got dragged down again
I'm pretty sure this one is a corkwing, it had the black spot on the tail end
Target ticked, so I moved down to the blocks for a pollock, thought I'd try the float first and if no luck then try the lures, but first cast, just at the edge of the blocks and the float disappeared. Had a good little fight on the rod and got my first pollock this year
Not huge, but I was happy with the size, about 40cm.
Loads of macky bashers out, but no macky! I seen young Connor who'd had some big greater sand eel up at the wheel end, so thought I'd drop the float down up there - got a couple more coley, and another pollock!
Finished at about 9pm. Decent little float session, 2 new species for the hunt and got to christen the rod with some small but hard fighting fish - I bet the big wrasse must be pretty hard fighters, might have to try for some specimen size up north some time.
