I found this on a fella called Viking Valhalas blog,Norway of course but just imagine if you could set the time machine to minus 200 years .I reckon you would be having a few of these every trip as they were once the rats of the sea!Apparently 100 years ago on the Yorkshire coast there was a technique called plumping where steel rods would lower a line with a hook and mussell wrapped on with sheeps wool into the kelp gullies from the cliff tops ( no reel just a big yank)20 pounders one after the other.the holes where the steel rods where set are still there to this day......hmmm time machines

I wish I could go back two weeks when 5 pounders were being yanked out everywhere. Cos there is nothing at the moment

25 years ago you could get that kind of fishing within a couple of hours drive from here (though not as consistent). 30lb cod were caught regularly off Balcary Point in SW Scotland and hundreds of NE anglers would make the trip every winter season. IIRC Ken Robinson held the British shore caught cod record from there with a fish of 40 odd lb and he had plenty of others in the 20 - 30lb class.

But like all good things it was hammered and fished out and now we have to travel to Norway for the chance of that lunker of a lifetime.

Norway World war 3 and sand eel poison

Norway World war 3 and sand eel poison

Off to Norway or Iceland we must go then or recreate the conditions in the 40s that saw the sea replenish itself.....ive got some mines in the loft im sure...plus maybe some sand eel poison!

yeah malcolm as a kid i always remember me dad going there every time there was a southwestly on him and his pals would go over and stay in digs for 5 days etc n fish balcary.. he had about 5 trips or so up there and blanked each time on the point. he finally landed 1 of 14lb on the flat rock and the same day his mate had an 18lber off the point. his mate lost a really really big fish which he got to the side and then it dragged him round the corner of the point and parted his swivel.. then the comercials started fishing in there and wiped it out. they stopped going when i was about 12year old so i never got the chance to go:(

i fished Balcary a lot during the 80`s and had bests of 18lb, there were a good few doubles every year including 20`s and 30`s and in Ken Robinsons case 40`s,quite a few of the scottish lads kept there reports quiet as well as venues, there was a lot at castle point / colvend area that was credited to balcary, unfortunatly rose tinted glasses come on when we get nostalgic, there was a lot of blanks and mammoth flounder sessions, certainly most fish were low doubles not the 30`s and 40`s,though admittedly there was some outstanding bags when you caught it right.....
