Hi LAds
4 years ago, I started what I called "The wee comp" To be fished annually on the Mull of Galloway. This (Ithink) is its 5th year, we never really compete, and there isnt a prize. Never was. It was more of a social get together, and what fun they have been!!>In recent years we stayed at "The Muirhead Guest house" In Portpatrick, Duncan and Marie always made us very welcome, I think Im right in saying Willywetegg, Sixfoot Steve, Sless,
Insanojackson, Myself (Im sure) AndyN have all stayed there. All will vouch that nothing wass too much for Duncan, who cooked great breakfasts, aalways made sure everyone had had enough, and enjoyed the fish we sometimes gave him, didnt moan when I trailed mud on his carpet, and never mentioned the fact we bounced off the walls at 2 am returning from the Crown, and no dout left his pristine rooms smelling of stale beer, sweaty socks, and the odd fart.I spoke to Duncan about 4 weeks ago, to confirm bookings for this years trip, and looking back he seemed quiet, and not as chatty as usual.
I rang another BnB for a single night booking for Steve and Jim, and the proprietor told me Duncan and Marie were selling up. I tried to ring last night to confirm my booking for This Weekend (Birthday) and got a number noit recognised. So last night I spent three hours booking 11 people in different digs, having been told Duncans place was closed.
I was somewhat surprised and dissappointed Duncan had let me down.
I should not have been. I found out today, That Duncan has lung cancer, and has weeks to live, so sold up to move near his son and daughter. He had left strict instructions with the new owner, "not to let the lads from Newcastle down" I feel truly ashamed for doubting him.
So, I would like to suggest, the lads who attend this annual hootenanny of a disguised fishing trip, hoy a fiver each in, and buy a trophy.
Id like to call it "The Duncan Muirhead Wee Comp Trophy" To be given for one year to the captor of the heaviest fish, on the annual trip. Not a Memorial trophy, as as far as I know He still lives. But as a token of gratutude to a man who always made us feel as welcome in HIS home, as we did in our own.
PS, there are two places available. 20/21 june.
COULD ANY MODS PLEASE STICKY THIS FOR A WHILE. Ta
