Finally done it - went fishing caught a fish. Started an hour before high tide and fished for about three hours.

I took rag, fresh peeler and some frozen king prawns i found in the bottom of the freezer (not cooked)

Rig - Breakaway lead, One long hook length onto a 1/0 aberdeen with three beads.

It was only my third cast - bait was Rag and king prawn tail...ten minutes later the rod tip bounced and i struck and reeled in a good sized flattie (Plaice i think) just over 30cms...i wanted to catch and release but the bugger had swallowed the hook so i snipped the line and put it in the bag.

The rest of the night? Sweet fanny adams for me....there were some club anglers around me fishing a match and one of them was into 8 flatties and a codling...everone else was quiet...luck of the draw i guess.

Anyways that's it - I've saved a bit of bait so i'm going back tomorrow night for a few more casts. (hopefully catch another)

Well Done that man!!! :)

I popped down the quay and was gonna say hello, but wasn't sure which of the lads fishing was you.

Keith - I think....

Keith - I think....

....I saw you.

You got a baldy heed (like me) under that red cap of yours?

If so - I was the fella right in front of you...I was fishing with a fixed spool, everone else was on multipliers.

Aye I'm follically challenged :D but didn't have a cap on, I was in a silver astra.

How did you get on with the crab?

well...

well...

.....I caught nowt on it - but in terms of peeling it and getting it on the hook it wasn't that bad....the crabs were still a little away from being perfect peelers but I was able to gently prize off the the back shell and pick away the rest of the shell bits as best i could.

Lashed it on the hook and hoyed it out....the crabs aren't picky when it comes to scoffing their own are they?

I'm going back down tonight coz I've got a bit of bait left and I'm gonna try crab from the start....

One more question....How many times should you wrap the elastic around the bait? Is it a case of less is more? or do you just bind it up until it looks like a mummy?

well done mate on your first catch  for rapping elastic around the bait i usually do it just enough to hold the bait on the hook about 20 turns does it for me others might put a bit more on but i think it up you and what you think is enough

My oppinion is ,just enough elastic to keep the crab on the hook during casting ( casting style dependant ) also something else I picked up , if you use a two hook rig then the crab seems to draw the fish but they do go for worm baits on the other hook , well I've noticed this is true at Whitley anyway ,proven by a mate of mine ,I fished a pennel with cocktailed crab and he fished two separate hooks one with crab and the other with worm ,he beat me hands down and as an experienced club angler he says it works all the time ..... just a tip mate;)

Update 08.06.07

Update 08.06.07

Went down again tonight - glorious sunny evening, would've been a waste not to.

Same baits as before - started fishing about an hour and a half before high tide.

Rig: Long hook length onto small aberdeen with 6 or so beads(smaller than 1/0) running ledger(ish) set up. Started off with breakaway lead but water was flat as mill pond and tide was gentle so switched to oval bomb.

Different story to last night - caught nowt for the first hour and half until the tide was at it's peak (about 2115). Had been using crab-rag cocktail baits all night...few taps of the tip but nothing concrete.

The sunny evening had long dissapeared and a cold sea fret had rolled in. Then the rod tip started banging away and I was into a nice fat flounder (see attached) I was able to chuck this one back as i'd hooked him in the lips. Length over a foot long, 35cms approx - If i was to guess the weight I'd say it was over a pound at least.

Then?.....that was it....hung around for another hour or so and went home, glad at least I'd caught something. There were only two others on the beach with me - one young lad hooked into a flattie and an older fella who'd been catching small coalies.

May go out tomorrow - haven't decided yet...high tide's at 2200ish and i aint got no headlamp

JUST WUNDERING IF IT THE BEACH JUST PAST THE FISH QUAY WERE YOU FISH, WERE THE OLD BROKEN WOODEN PIER IS. IF NOT DO YOU NO WHAT IT FISHES LIKE. THE ONE WERE YOU CAN PARK YOUR CAR AND ITS DIRECTLY IN FRONT OF YOU.

THANKS

It's a canny spot mate...small hook baits (1/0 aberdeens max) will get you good flatties - it fishes better 2 hours either side of high water IMHO

You can catch Codling/Whiting/Coalies there too....I even reckon you could catch Macky from the shore there during the summer coz one night I saw the fry being chased all round the bay within 20yds of the shore :o:D

If the tide is too big you won't have much of a beach to fish from so you can either fish from the Prom that sweeps round to the left or from the Prom type bit to the right next to the old lifeboat jetty ;)

Thought It Might Have Been A Canny Spot Mate As Ive Seen It A Few Times And Thought, I Wunder Wat That Fishes Like. Ill Give It A Try Some Time Soon.

Thanks Wallsendo
