  • Braid or Mono

Reading a few threads lately got me considering changing to 30lb straight through as i tend to lose quite a few leaders and everything else with it when snagged(currently on 20lb main and 60 lb shockleader) , anyone tried the braid from China off evilbay at all? or recommend decent quality line or braid for a non extortionate price?
    Cheers.
    Michael.

Have tried a couple of diff braids from china, one labled as Power Pro but dont know if genuine ,no probs with either but the dyneema one seemed thicker than the stated diameter. For the price it is ok for me.

If your using braid i've found its best to have a little mono backing on the spool as the braid can start to slip on the spool

Braid from the shore if beach fishing can be hard work, i have never tried it but best speak to a few people who have before purchasing it.

        Questions to ask....

        Whats it like for casting?
Does the surf pull fish off your hooks?
If you birds nest can you get it out or will it just melt?

        ETC

I am not a hardcore shore angler but for me i would stick to a good make of 30lb straight through over the winter.

I've been using spectra braid off eBay £7:50 (300yds/80lb) multi coloured braid for wrecking this season and it has exceeded my expectations.

If your fishing next to people beware, braid slices through mono no problem. I would still use a mono leader as braid has no stretch at all and can a. Crack off during a cast b. Cause too much natural resistance for your terminal tackle and c. Doesn't have the same abrasion resistance that mono does for a shock/rubbing leader.

But braid being a much finer diameter will sit better in a heavy sea and show bites better.

Haven't tried the Chinese stuff but planning to give it a go in the new year. Currently got 66lb (.35mm - same diameter as 15lb mono) Power Pro on my Saltist 20 with an 80lb mono leader and no problems so far.

Bite detection is amazing, it casts like a dream (make sure you are getting a round profile braid like Power Pro for multi use) and as braid floats there are no problems with abrasion as long as you don't tighten right up to the lead.

Only downside was it bounces about a bit in a big sea as there is no give at all in it. Going to put it on my 7HT Mag next time I need to re-spool.

Only caveat is I always carry at least one and usually two spare reels loaded with mono for if anything goes wrong (it hasn't yet as I very rarely crack off) / to swap over if it is causing too many problems in a big sea.

Yeah, should have said it's for a multiplier and beach not boat fishing. Not been out for ages and need to get meself out but always looking for decent upgrades and anything that'll help land a big un.
                    Cheers.

What size hooklinks are you using? what knot are you tying your shockleader with? and what do you use for the rotten bottom?

As i use 20lb with a 60lb leader and i always snap off the rotten bottom or the hook link first, very rarely do i lose the lot.

I have used the chinese stuff for pike fishing for last 6 yrs 65lb with no problem on my big pit reels and snag free conditions i tried it on the river once and found it has no abrasion resistance lost more rigs in one day than in 2 previous seasons i previously used berkley braid and found chinese stuff just as good went for the higher breaking strain just to be on safe side

I've tried the spectra line of eBay and it's pretty good, not as good as power pro but at £7.50 for 300meters it's a hell of a lot cheaper. As mentioned by another member it's diameter doesn't seem to be accurate though, the stuff I have is defo thicker than stated but it's still thin.

Yes it has no stretch and yes it will cut through mono like a knife through butter if you tangle with someone but in the right situation it's unbeatable. Try it on a clean beach or estuary and you will notice every single little nibble let alone a bite! I use 25lb straight through on my bass rod with a fixed spool and can punch a 3oz lead 100yards without even trying, it's casts like a dream too.

I use a genie clip from tapered leader tied onto the main line with a blood knot, I generally use bought rigs, flappers and pennels. As for rotten bottoms, I reckon most rigs are heavy line at the lead.
                            Cheers.
