Whitley Yellow Can?

Can anybody tell me what this buoy actually marks?
I've asked around and done a bit of web digging but come up with nothing.

I've paddled out to it twice now and if I remember correctly it's got something like; "Whitley Bay" then a few numbers and I think it's "EOD" ( might be EDO:confused:) ) painted on it.

Anyway, to me "EOD" is "Explosive Ordnance Disposal"! I don't recall anything relating to "Danger" written on it mind you.

Any road up, I'm just interested to know what it marks, be it shipping channel, hazard, jumping night spot etc:D

thanks in advance

Steve

not sure on this buoy exactly but my understanding is that a yellow buoy indicates the end of a pipeline or marks an area of special purpose ie military. They are also used to mark a channel within a channel aswell. Not a very specific answer but thats the limit of my knowledge:) Im sure some of the more experienced lads on ere will give you a better answer.

I have been told that it is for trawlers to drop off any explosive devices they catch in their nets, mines, torpedoes & the like, then the bomb disposal have a better chance of finding them I think,, some one said theirs one south of the Tyne aswell

the yellow can appeared when the built the w/bay sewer pipe i was lead to believe it was a marker for the end of the pipe

It’s definitely a buoy marking an explosives dumping area
