Trawling to be banned for 12 weeks

Alright lads,
just read an interesting article posted link below.

bottom trawling for cod will be banned for 12 weeks in the north sea in cod breeding grounds to help fish stocks recover. this is probably the most drastic action that has ever been taken to help cod stocks recover to what they once were.

a similar scheme was done with ireland for bass and still runs now they are not allowed to be fished when they are breeding.

i for one think this is a massive step forward and with more steps like this we can see cod stocks replenish and hopefully. Norway have had a big part to play in this and i think the EU should listen to them more often look at there cod stocks compared to the UK

Cod in the north sea will not last forever. it will be ahrd to police this ban but hopefully this is a sign of measures to come in the future

What are your thoughts

i havnt read the report..

does this also include other countries? normally when our boats are stopped it leaves the doors open for other countries to carry on fishing.

i have only just read the article but sure it said other countries were also taken part i posted the link m8 have a read. i think it is a big step in the right direction.

its a queer old life:D

scottish trawlermen are reporting that fish stocks are healthier than ever:exclam::exclam::exclam:

personally i believe NOTHING that is printed in the press

Sounds eminently sensible to me, unlike this response -

'It is catastrophic for us,' said Andrew Bagshaw, operations manager with Colne's, the company which operates the trawling fleet off Lowestoft. 'We simply cannot afford to take it lying down and we are not going to. We will ignore this and carry on and accept whatever the consequences are.'

A 12 week ban, which doesn't reduce the overall tonnage of Cod to be taken, merely means you have less time to catch it hardly seems to come under the heading of "catastrophic."

Oh and admitting they will break the law is hardly helpful.

I am all for it.

if they stopped fishing for 1 year , that would be a massive boost , there is enough frozen fish in the uk to last us for that year off !!!! 12 weeks mmmmm ??? will it even make any difference at all , I suppose the females that are breeding wont be caught until week 13

it could make a big difference, fishing is determined on the previous year's breed how succesful it was so if the cod have the chance to breed without being caught for 12 weeks this can only be good. its means more fish will have that chance to breed.

Can only be a good thing in the long run. A couple of years of this and there may be a future for the stock.

The industry can't be trusted to manage the fishery back to health in it's own.

I wonder if strong enough incentives/penalties will be put in place to ensure compliance

Yes It will make a difference to his pay packet, 12 weeks without pay lol...I hope they have the resources to police this 12 week ban and hit them where it hurts if anyone is caught!!

I think what Nemo means is does the ban stop them trawling just for cod? or can they still trawl for other species but cant keep any cod they catch ?

I agree this is a massive step forward , even if the cod just have time to spawn, and then most of them are caught it will surely improve future stocks. Hopefully it will be an actual ban on the activity of trawling, not just a rule that cod cannot be landed. Thanks for posting.

thas what i was saying aye,

they cant fish for cod, but they will still be cought weather the boats wants to or not just like now when the boat reaches its limits

they will have to be put back dead or alive

the whole aim is to allow spawning to happen for the 12 prime weeks a cod would spawn .... it gives millions of eggs a chance at least to grow up into cod .... if the 12 weeks wasn't allowed the females with roe would normally be netted and killed... and the chance of offspring would never happen ...

Old news

Elliot Morley has been convicted over his expenses and served a prison sentence and been released since that article was written. He served as minister from 1997 to 2003 that gives you a clue as to how old it is. So the question is did the ban all those years ago help ?
