just had a brilliant weekend with my mates up darkest scotland, where men are men and sheep are nervous

started with my mate tony getting a PB spurdog at 18lb, my best was 12lb, but i did get more doubles than him, sorry no pics, flat battery on the camera.

next day sailed 10 miles to a mark on my plotter which produced some big flat things

first tonys 168lb personal best



then my PB male fish which was off the chart but was probably 135lb



then a fish which nearly pulled tony over the side because his drag was up too tight,

193lb new PB





this is what a 193lb skate can do to a 30-80lb class stand up rod



on the sunday he had a 16.5lb spur plus 2 other good fish to win the club match

all fish released unharmed

the 135lb skate i caught had what looked like handles cut into it's cheeks, possibly done by a commercial to make it easier to haul back over the side singlehanded, bit of a shame, but better than killing it for pot bait.

this is the 4th fish i have heard of with this mutilation

I noticed a fixed spool reel in one of the pic's, do you use that for hauling up one of them monsters or is it for the lighter stuff.

i do today because i haven't had a shave since thursday and all the fantastic food and beer has put back the weight i had struggled to lose over the last couple of weeks

it is a seahog seatrooper, brilliant wee boat, loads of space as you can see.

codfather,

the fixed spool rod was used for spurdogs in the shallower bits and also for mackerel, we manged to get 6 for the landlord at our hotel on the sunday

boblydon,

i would only live up there in the winter, the midgies in the summer would drive you insane mate

not OBAN, a bit further west...

in fact on the saturday when we got the skate we were going to go into BALAMORY for a pint in the mishnish as we were only about 2.7 miles from there, but were running out of daylight

hi ray,

we use 6 foot stand-up rods, we have 2 ugly stik 30-80lb class and a rod i built myself from an 80lb conoflex standup blank which has had in excess of 30 skate on it including the boat record of 204lb, thats my boat not the UK record

the uglys are matched to a pair of avet 4/0 2 speed reels and the conoflex has a shimano TLD30 2 speed bolted on

we spool up with 50lb fireline and 130lb nylon leaders, 12/0 hooks to 250lb mono, 2lb of lead is the norm as we are usually in 400-550 feet of water, these fish were shallow (for us) in 370 feet

that weekend a friend of mine landed a skate at 157lb on a 15lb class ugly stick and30lb braid.

thing was he was in the loch where there is virtually no tide, where me and tony fished the tide runs hard in the top 50 fet of water and the last bit is hard work on the tackle with the fish kiting in the tide

did it again on tuesday....

went to OBAN (TRM) this time just for the day and had 3 nice fish, all of which fought really well

first was my 123lb male fish



then my son had a small female at 92lb



then tony did it again with the biggest, albeit on my rod as i handed it over so we all had a fish (such a kind soul i am)



took this sunset pic while waiting fro my mate to get his boat clear of the slip



thats it for this year,

bob,

i have to thank gogs for the bait for this trip.

he came by my house on christmas eve and dropped in 6 coalies, 3 of which were about 3lb

we usually put a mackerel threaded up the trace then head hook a coalfish.

on this trip we were using double coalfish because the mackerel were still frozen



my fish and tonys were caught on the same bait, a 1.5lb coalie cut into 5 bits and threaded kebab style and a 3lb coalie head hooked

all this on a 12/0 hook and 250lb nylon trace

a friend of mine just bought a holiday cottage at glenborodale (if thats how it's spelt)

i could get it anytime for my hols, but i would probably wake up with a knife in my chest after 3 days if i took my wife there,

one of the reasons I love it. we have to do at least one trip a week to balamory when we're up there, which is perfect, 11.45 ferry from kilchoan, takes them 2 hours to get around all the shops, leaving 2 hours to burn in the mish' before the 4pm ferry back!

there's was a lovely swedish(scandanavian anyway) barmaid working in there in october!

We had a skate at the end of the summer that had the" hand holds" hacked into it . This fish was well healed so it can not have happened recently and it makes me wonder if this is still practiced or these are just old wounds. I have a picture somewhere and it looks gruesome

Great post and lovely pics. Cant wait to get up there again, just a shame its so far away and I cant say I fancy the trip while the daylight hours are shorter than the travelling time

re the handles, we didn't know they were there until we tried to put him back in the water and our hands went through his cheeks, we both snatched our hands away going "yeuch" at the same time, what an unpleasent surprise

davy holt has had, i think 4 of these fish from the sound of mull about 10 miles from where we got ours,

where were you fishing??
