&%***$%, Just got back from a session (05:00)started of pretty good I had a couple to 2lb then another at 3lb, two guys joined me and they had a few to 5lb, everything was going great .
The two lads went just before high water (one caught a rockling, and you know the saying!)I carried on, then it all turned to rat sh1t.
My rod started to bounce and nearly went over, pulled into a fish which took me 10 mins to get it in close before my reel locked up, could I hell turn the handle so had to start to hand ball it.
got it to the side and sh1t myself, it was four (yes four) feet long and had a head bigger than mine.
Last year I had a cod of 16lb 9 oz and this fish was twice that size, could I fooc get it out of the water,
needless to say I pulled the hook out as soon as It got clear of the water.
All I've got to show for it is ripped fingers on both hands and very sore eyes
Learnt a few important lessons though. 1) when you think you have enough shock leader on DOUBLE IT (might have been able to tie it off and got down to retrieve fish). 2) dont wipe away tears with the cloth you have been using to clean your hands with all night.(eyes sting like hell)
MERRY F KING CHRISTMAS!!!!!

That's really bad luck mate - I'm gutted for you!

Just as a thought, I know you fish for big cod on the very rough marks - would a telescopic gaff be useful in those situations?

Not sure about the gaff Mike, a SHOTGUN possibly (thank god I didnt have one I may have shot MYSELF).
Fishing Whitby's west (fancied a change from rock hopping) casting into the kelp in front of the east, so as you can imagine it would have to be a very long gaff, at least 15-20 ft long.
Could not reach my shock leader to tie it off to get down to the bottom landing, the shock leader knot was inches away from my fingertips (whats left of em, there was blood everywhere) before the Moby broke for freedom. Another 2 or 3 inches and I would have had it.

A fair few fish were getting caught and not a whiting to be seen.

I get it now Tal. Thought you would have been fishing Mulgrave. That is a high wall to get a fish up on the East pier.

I'm coming up on Monday, so I hope a bit of movement's still there. I was thinking of fishing the big hole round the cliffs at Runswick at low water and then moving onto the pier into the night.

What bait were you using Tal? When I was on the east a couple of weeks ago the fish were only going for frozen peeler (good stuff) or baits that were tipped with razor.

Cryin' for you here Tala, that's heartbreaking. Going to what Mike was suggesting, long gaff, this subject comes up every year because someone has lost the fish of a lifetime.
There was a post on here, I think it was last year (could have been the year before) mentioning the type of gaff that Rex Hunt uses off the cliffs in Aussie. It looks to consist of 3 hooks, large obviously and I don't mean fishing hooks, on a length of rope. You slide it down your line and the hooks open up as it slides over the fishes head, when you put pressure on to pull it up the hooks close around the head.
I feel sure somebody actually found these for sale in the UK but I really can't remember where.
Not a lot of point in wishing you a Merry Christmas m8.

I've given up on fishing the rock marks for a week or two after smashing my elbow at sheepstones last month (still not right).
I was using crab and mussel wrapped in large squid (bait was as big as my fist).
Rag/runnydown wrapped in squid on my other rod took a few nice codling and the billet (casting towards Sandsend, from the end of the pier).
The sea was very lively last night/this morning, coming over the bottom level at high water.
Have a good night when you get down Port and keep them baits as big as you can there are some monsters out there at the mo

Know how you feel tala,i lost one well into the twentys when i tried to coax it on to a ledge and a swell lifted it and ran it along the rocks cutting my line,i was kicking stones for a 1/2hr
Harry i posted a link on that thread about gaffs and seem to remember getting shot down for how barbaric it was, heres the link again anyway.

That's the one Gordon, I didn't realise you had taken any stick about it being barbaric. I would have thought that if you have a fish big enough you use the gaff on, the likelihood of you returning it would be quite small so it's gonna die anyway.
Probably a fair bet that Tala wishes he'd had one anyway.

Just seen that gaff, brilliant idea, that would of done the trick.
I'm am going to invest in one, Cheers lads
I actually had the fish under my feet for about 5 mins, just could not lift the bloody thing at all, the line was slicing my fingers to shreds, so I would have had the time to get hold of it with that gaff.
It's one of those IF ONLY'S.
For 20 years I've been after a fish like that (well to be honest I could'nt of imagined a fish of that size) Fantastic sight that I will never forget.
Once again cheers lads
