Sure theres some Conger up that way poacher. I fished at Cullernose 2 or 3 years ago and saw my rod literally get pulled out of the stand. I managed to grab hold of it, loosen the drag and just watch line strip from my reel. I eventually tried to stop it but it didnt want to know. Everything went slack in the end, reeled in and found my 4/0 pennel bitten off.

Conger are suppose to inhabit all of the coastline around the British Isles,
But as yet I have never heard of a shore caught conger from the North Yorkshire coastline.
Thats not to say that there arnt any, its just something no-one targets.
You did have the correct type of bait (squid) to temp a conger, me for one would love it if the conger eel did start to show up in the north east.
I do fish for conger a lot down south (PB 16lb from battery point bristol) but at this time of year the conger fishing is far from good.
North east conger umm!!! dont know about that at the momment.

Caught, and seen caught, 2 double figure congers from the shore around Eyemouth (as you would expect). The only area around Tynemouth that used to produce anything other than "eels" (around a pound or so) was the back of the South Crab Hill where I've seen them up to 5lb. Having said that I haven't fished on the Hill for 10 years or more.

If I remember rightly there was a 14lber caught up that way a few years ago. Used to be on the old NESA catch report pages on the old site.

the best conger i've seen caught on the ne coast was about 20 years ago. i was fishing an all night qualifier at marine parade in scarborough, all that was getting caught was the odd codling and coalie just about size when the bloke fishing the next peg to me caught a 15lb conger on peeler of all things, his mate had a drop net and luckily it went in first time. no one could ever remember a conger caught from there before and to the best of my knowledge none since.
there was also a small strap caught in the nesa comp just over a year ago from s.shields pier.
it may not have been a conger though that snapped you off, my money would be on a seal !

Dunstanburgh the most common place these days for conger. Although conger have ben taken from Cullercoats harbour 10lb, Beadnell, Craster, etc. They are there and getting more common. If you get a lunging bite which does not bounce back up and you are stuck chances are it is a conger. As those that fish the west coast for them, if you keep constant pressure on sometimes they will come out there hole.

We had some BIG runs on the boat last year , so fierce we could not stop them . The traces were cut through and we put it down to big Pollack , not so sure now .

I know someone with a crab boat and he often gets conger in the pots between Blyth and Whitley. I'm sure more would be landed if people were geared up for them but probably just get bitten off.

I fish for conger from the shore at portihead (avonmouth), the best i've had todate is a 16lber.
I use a 60lb mono pulley rig, if you think you may be getting bites off conger the best bet is to get the pressure on straight away and dont slacken off till the fish is ashore.
any slack line and the buggers will get themselves into any nook and cranny resulting in a near impossible task off getting them back out.
i hope this helps
