Hi lads and lasses, after putting two and two together in my mind and coming up with fish!, I had a gut feeling that a few of our fishy friends could show on the end of South Shields pier last night. To be honest I'd originally planned to hit Lynemouth beach and had heard rumours of great fishing from the beach only that day and the thought of cod from the beach made this a hard decision to take, Lynemouth or the hit and miss pier?, ultimately I decided to go with my instinct and head up the pier.......I'm really glad I did.
Loads fishing on the pier at teatime but bugger all caught, I nearly turned around for the 20 mile drive to the beach but plodded on and set up on the end of the pier, plan was to fish all of the tide out and an hour back in giving 7 hours to catch during darkness.
Two hours in and not a bite, big mistake.
Then my rod pulled steadily down and a big bow of slackline resulted in a typically good cod bite, I wound down as fast as possible to find the fish on, I new it was a decent one and it was fighting hard against the tide, after a few bum twitching moments my best fish of the season so far was landed.....
7lb of cod, get in.
After that I caught another four fish, the biggest being 2.5lb and the others just shy of 2lb.
Only seven fish on the pier last night and my pal Gaz had the other two, I had 5. Bait used was yellowtail lug, tipped with fresh crab cast as far as possible, which is about 50 yds for me!
All fish quickly weighed, photographed and succesfully released, a 15lb total catch weight in my 5 fish, with the best part of the night releasing the biggest fish, I took it down the steps at the small wall, shone my light on it, then watched it hang in the water for a few seconds before swimming away, great stuff.
