Most anglers fish beside someone else so fish can be measured and released and score cards can be marked up by the witness. Some anglers prefer to fish themselves and go to their secret or favourite marks. Lone anglers can only bring back fish to the weigh in that are minimum size limits. These fish are then eaten.

We brought the scoring in as it was a good conservation measure as it was not unusual to have several anglers with good bags of whiting which not everyone ate. It also reflects the rules and scoring when the SAMF challenge is held. This is where teams of 15 are entered by the SAMF, Police, Armed Forces and Fire Brigade and compete against each other over a two day event. The SAMF lads take some beating generally and invariably come 1st in the teams.
