Areet lads i am looking for a bit of advice as i am new to spin fishing.

What size rod would yous recommend and casting weight?
Whats better for it, braid or mono ? What strength ?
Do i use shock leader ?
How do i set a jelly worm up without using a jig head ? for example were do i put the weight and do i attach it to my main or use a different line ?

Thanks

I use a 9ft rod which casts upto 50g but will handle heavier. I prefer braid and use 40lb which reduces losses over rougher ground.

For jellyworms I use a 3 way swivel, attach your main line to the top eye and a 3ft of mono to the bottom eye, usually 30lb for the ground you'll be fishing over for pollock/coalies with the chance of codling and wrasse as well. Use a small lead link on the middle eye and attach your lead to this, usually 1 to 2oz. Use a constant retrieve for jellyworms altering the speed. Don't strike at any nips just keep winding until your rod tip goes over. For spinners you can use a constant retrieve or add little jerks to it.

Hope this helps mate.

Maximum size of rod i would use is an 8 foot 15/50 gram 3/4000 size reel with 20lb braid

I actually prefer my 7-28grm rod with nanofil 21lb mainline 15lb fluro leader a 3000 reel and will be using texas style set up with weedles hooks . The set up in the pic was shown to me couple of years ago and does work very well. , I also remember while using the eddystone eels he would lightly press the hook into the lead to aid casting. When it hits the water the eel is released with no damage to the hook! Good luck I hope to see your reports on here soon!!

Agree with spongebob Nathan. Nothing wrong with the slightly heavier rod set up as topbanana mentioned above but I prefer to fish as light as possible and have a good old laugh with it!

Have a look in the lure fishing section mate. There's plenty of help in there. I know cos I've just started lure fishing not long ago.

Over clean ground, yes the lighter the better but where I spin for pollock you would'nt get away with a 15lb hook length.

I've managed various Scottish rough ground marks with no bother generally with 20lb hook lengths. Mind you, if you hook a big one your gonna really struggle no matter what your using lol :D

I fish eyemouth regular and take with me up to three rods the heaviest up to 100g the ground fished can be really heavy but 20/60g rod will do the job m8 my reels are all 4000,s and do the job if your using spinners sink and draw and down deep you must be willing to lose gear eels and worms with jig heads deep again and vary the retrieve

believe it or not I use 8lb braid aswell as nanofil up at abbs as this is fine when casting 40-50yds . in my time going up there I have used mono to 18lb and braid to 30lb and have lost just as much gear as the lighter line I favour now. xtra distance because of the thinner dia means you can get to the fish if they hang back in the deep at low water ........just imo tho ;-);-)
