A few mackerel now showing from the boats and my mate had 3 tope in his boat on Saturday in Luce Bay. He also had thornbacks and smoothounds.

Bass being caught on bait but cannot comment on the shore pollack/wrasse situation as have not been out yet.

Here is a link to charter boats here in Drummore if anyone has not got this contact.

Onyer Marks! Sea Angling Charters

Some anglers like to "rough it" when here but quite a few book into our caravan park. There are 6 hire vans and there is also a small camping area. We are fortunate in that we have a static caravan on the site and spend most of the summer here. Need any more info just shout up.

ive booked a static caravan on clashwhannon and im heading there from may 30th - june 1st

Looking forward to it but i have no clue about the area and local marks :o

We will actually be back home in Whitley Bay for that weekend as we have tickets to see Kings of Leon at SJP otherwise I could have taken you out. In the Clashwhannon pub there is a decent OS map on the wall with marks on plus a lot of the lads on here can give you good info.

Basically off the shore you are looking at mackerel, dogfish, smoothounds, pollack, wrasse, conger, rays and an outside chance of tope.

Tight lines

oh damn ! :(

What kind of marks will fish best around that time beach or rock ? i would prefer to stick to beach for baiting and spinning off rocks if the fish are in.
Also any advice on smoothounds / rays / tope

Rule of thumb on the Mull is wrasse and pollack off the west side and smoothounds, rays and tope on the east side. Bass on both sides but mainly in Luce Bay.

Nowadays I spend 90% of my time lure fishing for bass off the shore.

okay cheers !

Any specific beaches around clashwhannon where you lure fish for bass ? also where would the closest bait shop be?

Thanks again

I wish I knew the answer to your bass question - I blank more than I catch !!!!! Basically they turn up anywhere. I find dawn and dusk more productive that daytime on the lures and have taken them on lures in the dead of night.

From Drummore heading north up the bay Kilstay Bay,Grennan Woods,Terally Bay - either end,New England Bay - either end,Ardwell,Sandhead,Stairhaven,Monreith. All worth a go but you will have to put the hours in !!!! You could also try the Cailiness stretch between Drummore and Maryport for bass.

If you want to catch fish try for the wrasse or pollack on the west side of the mull. West Tarbet will normally produce. For conger and tope try the wall mark at the end of the mull.

Hope this helps

John

I forgot to mention that just about wherever you fish you will be plagued by dogfish. There are also big mullet to be caught - if you can outwit them !!!

John

ive never caught a dogfish so it will be a treat if i manage to get one :D

Always like adding new species to the list haha. I assume mullet are caught on lures or floats ?

Nearest bait shop - Ardwell Marine for frozen and the Sports shop in Stranraer for possible live bait and frozen. Ok digging for lug just on the south side of Drummore harbour and always worth knocking off a few limpets for the wrasse.

Mullet, you need freshwater gear/small hooks/bread. Dogfish !!!!!! Launch a bait about 100 yds or so south of the caravan park as its fairly clear ground there. Dogfish, flatfish and an outside chance of bass.

Keep an eye out for the otters, quite a few about.

You'll get a doggie up the mull mate. Just whack a lump of bluey out and you'll get one.

I've stayed at the chashwhannon site last year and I'll stay there every time if I can. The steaks are marvelous and there's real ales on. What more would ya want after days fishing.

Thats why we have a static van here. Gods country !!!! Seen otters off the clash beach on our last 3 visits this year.

John

The 3 times i have seen them this year they have just been a few yards out in the sea from the Clash caravan park. Dawn and dusk seem to be about the best time.
