You make a valid point, I was at the end of South Shields pier early on two weekends ago, got there at 05:00 and there was only six of us at the end of the pier, I fished beach side of the Blocks, at this time in the morning the six fisherman were either all weather, all year round veterans, insomniacs, or not keen on their wives (and in need of an excuse to escape). By 09:00 some 'newbies' were present on the end of the pier and we did indeed offer some help and advice, not a problem with that and all things 'good and proper' in the early morning sunshine......by 10:00 a different 'type' of angler started arrive, ahead of their vanguard came an individual carrying his rod and hi girlfriend, (in a fur coat), carrying a twelve pack of Fosters, soon after the hoard arrived, including three very special fisherman who kept shouting fish on, jumping here and there hustling fisherman out of the way......time to leave.......I had a dozen mackeral, and thats enough for me

fished the heugh breakwater last Saturday afternoon not a lot of macky about but enough to keep everyone reasonably happy I bagged three which was about the average take for everyone on the day. I counted the people on the pier and there was just over 40 guys and girls .so here is the breakdown as I saw it, about 15 people who knew what they where doing including the girls, a group of poles 5, about 6 to ten chavs,[well they look like chavs to me with cans of larger in their hands and shouting but to be fair they caused no probs ] and strangely a group of Chinese gentlemen having a great time the weather was great and I think every one enjoyed themselves and isn't that's what angling is all about
the last 4 sundays i been on shields pier and have to agree with you, but i think wat most people are compaining about is the total ****** that come now and then and spoil it for all, makie bashing is fun for all when it done responsibly

I fished next to that group of Chinese lads the other day. just me and them on the end. they don't speak a single word of English between then. they were having a great time trying to get their fish in before the seal got them. I had to keep out of the way of there casting though. some very enthusiastic techniques were being used.

well to be fare i cant stand the piers this time of year as you get to many wanna be fishing people with no clue even after you offer you get a look then told i no what im doing you ask nice but all you get is abuse or or they do the opposite and cast over ya line.
not saying everyone is like this but come winter where are they then, clean piers, less cans less dope ends and less litter.
i believe its mostly the guys who come on at 8am and leave at 8pm bagging what they can to sell to shops. day in day out till makie is all gone.

And i bet every fish they caught was eaten Bill.
Unlike the idiots that catch 50 hoi them in a pile to bake in the sun for 6 hours,then kick them back over the side.

I've had them on a single handed fly rod when they go racing around far fiercer than trout or salmon. The horse mackeral put up even more of a battle.
Are you using a shooting head with the double hander? Most of macks I've had like a very fast moving fly, which makes for a lot of casting and shooting the line back out.

Scandi Head with a 10ft fast sinking Poly leader mate.
I was just casting the fly square to the flow and as it swung round twitched the rod tip about a foot.
Every fish took in around 6ft of water.
I was actually after Seatrout,hooked and lost two,one about 2lb that came out of the water a shook the fly off straight away the second one was a good one that had 30 yards of backing off me twice before coming unstuck.THe Macky were a bit out gunned on my Salmon rod,a Switch rod (which i don,t own)with a Skagit line to handle the heavy tips and bigger flies would be more fun.
There was no room for a back cast with a single hander where i was so spey casting was the only option.
All on this fella,tied on a size 6 Mini Manta.Wing length 2 inches.
