Take ssp, it only takes one of the numpties who stand on the wall at the end to fall in and they'll be no more fishin there
 
i thought the work on the pier was being funded by the lottery if so
it should be open for the public as that is who has paid for the repair

The problem is a small minority of "anglers" make it something of an unpleaseant experience for the general public, and as the council are putting a lot of effort in to refurbishing the pier as a tourist attraction putting a stop to this behaviour is a no-brainer for them.

And we can't just blame the Mackerel bashers, I've been on there in the depths of winter and the place has been a disgrace with rubbish everywhere and stinking of p*ss

The problem is countrywide I am afraid. I do quite a bit litter collection over on the Mull of Galloway each year. The flat rock/Terally Bay and East Tarbet are normally the worst. Discarded line,bait packets,beer bottles/cans,disposable BBQs etc.

Fence posts have also been dug up to be used on anglers fires !!!!

The real sickener is seeing piles of dogfish dumped above the high water mark,Terally Bay is particularly bad for this.

Last time I had a stoll along South Shields pier with the wife just could not help myself and started picking up anglers discards !!!!

I think the way forward is to educate the young anglers about codes of conduct and having concideration for others.

The character on the wall actually seemed a canny enough kid ( I say "kid", he told the lad from port of tyne, who asked him to get down, that he was 33 and was happy to continue standing on the wall at his own risk:rolleyes:). He seemed to know what he was doing, lure fishing with a single lure and getting almost a fish a chuck, including a codling. The sad part came when, after bagging right up on mackerel, he decided he couldn't be arsed to gut the "bag for life" full of fish he'd caught during the day and palmed them off onto an older bloke fishing the rail, who apparently told the lad he; "didn't need any more fish, that's why I've been chucking them back in" He took them anyway, then in turn palmed them off onto a group of schoolkids who turned up shortly before he himself left.:confused:

This character was sitting dropping a lure close to the wall and eventually pulled in a pollock of about 3lbs (ish) whatever the weight, he couldn't wind the fish up the wall so had to stand on the wall and hand ball it up, while an "aahd gadgee", wound in the slack for him.

I've sat on the wall myself in order to float fish but wouldn't dream of standing on it.

I don't want to join any club, particularly a fishing club, so the idea of using fishing clubs to police fishing on our piers is out of the question for me.


I've witnessed two occasions in the last 4 years or so, when people have ended up in the water after standing on the wall at the end of Shields pier.

One fell off because he was stoned/pixxed and his "mates" threw him the lifebuoy ( the rescue device not the soap!)the other kept jumping off and clambering back up, either using the ladders on the end or else the ladders nearer the blocks-this toxxer was also either pixxed or stoned.


The ideal solution for me, would be to close the pier to anglers, except those in possession of a permit, for which they would either have paid maybe £10 a day or say, £100 for a years access.

This would certainly weed out most of the shxte but not necessarily all, as I've also witnessed pretty shixxy behaviour from so called "serious anglers" too.

Alas, it would be unworkable because even at that rate, it probably wouldn't be self sustaining.

For a start; you'd need some pretty serious and expensive metal work around the gate and then someone on permanent duty checking permits and making damn sure that none of the "unwashed" got onto the pier with fishing tackle.

The other obvious snag is that to most people, £100 is still a lot of money, it certainly is to me but if it meant for example,that I could lure fish for mackerel, pollock and cod off the pier in summer, without too much risk of injury from flying "plunda's" ( this appears to be chava for "lead weight") and strings of daylights ripping into human flesh, particularly mine, I'd find the money. It would also put an end to the irritating begging of "plunda's", "dayleets" and hooks by both kids and "adults" alike.

I say it wouldn't be self sustaining but then it seems to work "Darn Sarf", where there are indeed piers etc that require a permit to fish them.

Maybe Port of Tyne and Sunderland Council should try looking at the piers as potential financial assets, rather than just huge liabilities?;)

I agree with a hell of a lot of what you're saying but we have to be very careful of the road we go down. As for every chav and scumbag there is a decent one just getting into angling and especially the kids, however annoying they maybe! Most cut their teeth on a pier. I have only recently got back into sea fishing after years away chasing salmon & trout which, as we know is not cheap. The main reason i started is my 12 year old son wanted to go and times are hard so thought I'd get him going with a bit of sea fishing cheap and easy access needless to say he loves it and so do i with some advice off the lads on here we've been catching regular and ive had as much fun pulling in flatties with him as i have 20lb salmon. The thing is if you start charging to fish piers you are cutting off a way for a lot of kids to learn and carry the sport on for another generation. Like you i'd happily pay a fee to fish safely but countless others couldn't.
 
first off for me it's great to sea the kids [mackie bashing] it's how we all started every one of us can remember the excitement we felt when we hooked our first mackie, the pull on the line and the fight from the fish,happy times, yet the kids of today are the future of our sport don't forget that and don't knock them they have a lot to learn.
secondly the grown up dick heads that infest our piers here on the north east coast during the summer months,what can be done about them, in my opinion we can't do nothing they have as much right to go fishing from our piers as the most seasoned sea angler has, i hear a lot of complaints on this site about these people getting ****ed , flying leads and strings of daylights going all over the place, fair enough but that does not change anything, complaining does not equate action,how do we change the mind set ,to be honest i have't a clue but what i do know is something has to change and moaning about it on this forum is not going to do anything..
 
I don't usually 'do clubs', however I've been very pleasantly surprised since joining SSAC this year. For a start I've never blanked while fishing on either pier, have met some nice folk (even GeordieH!) & have never had to put up with the usual crap & other detritus usually found on the likes of Middleton Pier which is like a stinking sewage plant!
Sunderland council along with others need to get a grip & turn our piers into recreational but safe, clean & dare I say it 'profitable' venues.
There again, how many 'serious' anglers would travel 28 miles down a dead end road in the NW of Scotland only to leave all their ****e behind? Rig packets, bait cartons, beer cans, discarded line....
I'm no fantastic angler but I do respect my surroundings wherever I am be it pier, beach or rocky coast & this subject really boils my water!
 
Well it seems roker pier was open again from friday and ive just been informed that the lighthouse was broken into again last night.if its true i think this will be the final nail in the coffin.

It boils my p--s when you here what other no brainers do that spoils it for others I was hoping to get some Mackie bashing in this week I hope it doesn't close what they need is a live camera putting up to catch the culprits
 
if it has been done again is down to the pricks that broke in before these people new fishermen would get the blame after reports in the local press.
in my opinion its not the lads fishing its the opportunist theif scum bags:mad: low life:mad: these people have no regard for property
