Well after a early morning fishing on roker pier.i was informed by one of the workmen to make the most of it as the pier is very likely to be closed sometime nxt week.due to the goings on in the last two weeks.burning of workmens scaffolding timbers.fishing on drum end when fenced off.recking the portaloo which is in the fenced off area.on wednsday night the lighthouse was broken into.gained entry through a window via scaffoldind and stole over two grands worth of gear.workmen n council say enough is enough ans there is a meeting today and they are just waiting for top man at council to sign papers n give green light to close it.workman even asked for my number to keep me informed as what happens n could save me waisted journey nxt time go fishing if it gets closed.same lad also said if it does get closed it will be till work is finished on lighthouse which will be aprox 7-8 weeks.he also said that the council have mentioned.on the reopening of pieryou can only fish with a permit and key for gate issued by council.there will probs be replies to this thread with members saying they cant do this and they cant do that but im only saying what i got told this morn from workmen.so if it does get closed i hope those responsible are well proud of themselves.one word springs to mind for those responsible.(parasites)
 
It's a shame the minority ruin it for the rest, it's so cliche and happens every year.

It won't affect me as i don't fish the piers anymore, i prefer my local marks and peace and quiet in between trips away.

But I do have sympathy for the lads that use the piers but you can't stop these morons any other way than shutting it down, nee good when there's vandalism and gear being nicked.

Maybe SSP and Roker should be locked as you've said above - and only open to club members like Tynemouth, seems to work from what i've seen / heard
 
could see this happening after they were spotted on end last time.

Tynemouth only open when they fish a match only I think, don't think you can just go on when want even with key. could be wrong but think that's how it works.

just have to wait and see now, for 3 weeks of a year gets morons on then never to be seen again.

the quicker they start the key system the better! 100 quid deposit for a key then permit charge on top of that should deter the CLAMPETS !
 
Sad indeed when minority spoil it for the decent folk!

Just to also mention that Blyth pier closed for 6 days between 6th-20th July for repairs........sign at entrance to pier says ( but does not specify exact days.....suppose it may be weather dependant)
 
A membership fee/key is the way to go in my opinion. (Even though I've never fished Roker), I'm a member of SSAC & don't begrudge paying a fee one bit especially if it keeps the scrotes off. In fact I don't know why Sunderland council haven't thought this through already, how many locals/regulars would be willing to pay a fee of some description, with the proceeds going towards the upkeep of the pier?

Problem is that Roker is a public access pier and an important part of the councils seafront strategy. No way are they going to put a locked gate on there with access for fed paying anglers only.

More likely they would just ban angling altogether but at the end of the day I reckon that they will just re-open the pier to everyone once the work is complete
 
damage, fires and stealing, i very much doubt that anglers would be responsible for doing that, i can remember back in the day when probs a small minority used to think that burning pots from round the cabins to keep warm on the rat house seemed like a good idea but even that was on a rare occasion, as been said the pier is open to the public so i would put it down to an opportunist that has spied his chance and took it, as for the council who knows what plans they have for roker pier in the future and whether it includes anglers or not?
 
When we fished Norway we went to a jetty where there was a couple of works cabins. Lads used to go out tending the Salmon farming. The cabin was unlocked and the workmen left their keys in their cars when they went out on the boat. I asked for permission to fish from jetty rather than just walk in via the unlocked gate. No problem at all I was told. I said to my mate you could not get further than from what we are used to back home. Thieves and ****e.

it just a matter of time before the council decide to close the pier to anglers, cant see how a key for the gate would help as the council intend to make the pier and light house a visitor attraction so the gates would have to remain open for general public access.
possible they could put a security gate house and security who knows ? .
all councils now have been cut back to the bone with funding and staff redundancy.
its a dam shame that a good venue like roker pier has been put in jeopardy again by mindless people :mad: that have no respect for closed gates and damage to property and now theft :mad:.
it is one of the few places disabled anglers can go in safety.

In the late 70's early 80's the fishing on Roker Pier was controlled via AWAC - The Association of Wearside Angling Clubs - All member clubs submitted their requested dates and the AWAC secretary allocated each club their dates and ensured each club got a fair share of use of the pier. Simple Basic Rules were

The Keys were picked up from the pilot house
Clubs had to provide a gate man who then controlled the access
1 Car allowed inside of the gate to allow shelter for the gate man
If pier awash the anglers move inshore to safer areas (controlled by clubs)
Any infringements then council instructed AWAC to remove the offending club from the list
Any club members deciding to access pier when not allowed - Club removed from the list

We never had any issues, just the odd spat between the clubs when submitting their dates.
 
People will still climb round a locked gate and get other keys cut for locks etc
Just look at the number of people / Lights on in the winter when its shut due to rough seas
 
Id close it all summer and open it in the winter, its too cold for the backward c*nts and theyre no where to be seen

you know as well as i do mick it was the idiots who tried to burn down that great pier, steetly jetty, so the powers that be chopped 20mts of the front now you can't get on and if you did it's not safe, spoilt it for all decent anglers.

I'd pay for a permit as well mate. As long as they enforced the need for them.
