I learned multiplier casting on a Mitchel 602 (no levelwind, or brakes for that matter) but I prefer levelwind multipliers for fishing.
Every time I visit the USA and Canada I see far more levelwind reels being used, and some of the beach fishermen are putting some serious distance out with their levelwind reels.
I can cast a big bait a long way with an Abu 7000C Syncro (with levelwind) and it makes a great workhorse reel for most fishing scenarios here in the UK. It can do boat, rough or clean shore, and fishing in the dark is a breeze when you don't have to invest any thought into controlling line lay yourself when retrieving.
I know that thumbing the line onto the spool becomes second nature to the point where you no longer even think about it when retrieving and I have non-levelwind multipliers, but I much prefer them with levelwind.
I've fished next to chaps with CT mags and rockets who weren't getting as far as me with my old 7000 Syncro and I recently fished alongside a guy who was using a levelwind Abu 7500 and he could really throw with it.
I think you can learn to cast well with either, and I think the greater distance a non-levelwind reel is potentially capable of is more or less academic in real world fishing, although it would make itself more obvious in tournament casting.
This is something I've been bouncing around in my head since coming back to see fishing and gearing up for it. I bought a couple of SL30SH reels and I'll probably be ditching them - they sit too high for my liking and I don't feel they offer me anything that I need that I can't achieve with reels I am more comfortable with.
The Penn reels look a little closer to my liking since, despite the lack of levelwind
, they sit lower on the rod.
I realise this is entirely subjective and based almost entirely on personal preference but I just wondered what you folks think about this over here.
