Well as keen as mustard it was off me and Micky went at about half six to make our way to the chosen wrecks with the Natalie Kristen astern of us on the way out of the harbour.

Upon starting time it was down and straight into fish from the off. The idea had been to pile on flowing traces heavily baited with mackeral and squid to try and sort out the bigger specimens, it didn't work!
First cod in the boat on the first drift fell to myself and wasn't a bad fish.

The wreck was full of medium sized fish so with no monsters showing off we went! After the fifth wreck we had a team talk and with the weather being so good we deceided to head further off than we had been before, I think we were 19 miles off at one point!
The first two wrecks we fished were ok but we had trouble with our echo sounder, not sure if the depth of water meant out small sounder wasn't up to it, we changed the frequency and could pick the wreck up but only just.
I had changed tactics to pirks and muppets as the depth of water meant fishing with a big bait took too long to get down. On the second wreck I hooked into what I thought was a yarker, I must admit I was gutted when I saw the outline of two fish on coming up, luckily the bottom one on the pirk was just under 11lb!

With us being way off we tried a few more wrecks on the plotter before returning to some inshore(8 mile off) wrecks. The fish were there again but unfortuanately only 3-5lb'ers whenwe were still in search of a monster.
We did see three minkie whales which was great but they wouldn't take the pirks!
Over slack water on the inner wrecks my shad kept tangling, I don't know if this was just down to the lack of tide to keep them off the main line/braid or what but I suspect that was the reason.
During the late afternoon we picked away with small cod again, no where near the Tyne boy's sized cod anyway!!!!!!!
I was double booked with my mam's 60th birthday so couldn't stay at the presentation for long but a big well done to Norma for the Amble Angling Centre and all concerned organising the event. Always a great day in memory of a great bloke.
I finished in the top ten somewhere and got a new rod for my efforts!
Well done to Geoff and Duncan on the Warlord and Colin for your ling and pollack respectively.
Micky wasn't far away either with his ling of over 7lb if I remember correctly and he won a rod as well!
Numbers wise we couldn't complain, this season is definetly a belter!
Back out maybe on Wednesday if the weathers ok! Can't wait! Might go Tuesday as well! Why not!:)

Enjoyed your report Graham, 11lbs is a nice fish, and on another day might have won it.:) Regarding your sounder in deep water, I find increasing the sensitivity brings the bottom back onto the screen, don't know if you tried that.
Can I ask you what you think of the Tohatsu engine, and is it economical.

Cracking report Graham, a cracking day had by all.

Canman, I have a 50hp Tohatsu (same engine as Graham and Mick I believe) and find it spot on, very reliable. I think it is fairly economical - I get around 30-35miles from 30 litres. As it is my first boat I have nothing to compare it to but believe it to be reasonable from what I've heard. Hope that helps....

Well done on the catch and getting among the prizes.:). I've had 2 40hp Tohatsu engines in the past, both were on ribs, and had no issues at all :). As far as i know they have been making outboards longer than Yamaha, Merc etc.

I'm told tohatsu outboards are made by Nissan , if so they should be just as good and reliable as the suzukis and yamahas and hondas ?

Arthur,

The tohatsu we have on Growler is the third Tohatsu we have had. We had a two stroke 9.9 on a triton Coble we had, a 15hp four stroke on the starley sea nymph and the 50hp on Growler. We have never had any problems at all with any of the three engines.
Consumption wise we are the same as Dave 1.25 miles to the litre slightly throttled back, if it's a day out solo you can hit 1.75 miles per litre easily. The weight makes a big difference.
The tohatsu's were commercial fishing engines and have been around for years. Amble marina is where we got all three from as it's so close for any warranty issues and a servicing centre.

I fished killie the other week with the kids for three hours and din't even get a nibble Tony! Not even any small flatties!
It's a different story a few hundred yards off the beach. I have got a strange feeling the winter season is going to start late August this year with cod on the beaches from the off with the slightest bit of sea running! It seems to get earlier every year!

Good report there Graham. At least there are some fish further off shore, cos there's nowt from the beaches.

:Dthere sitting off shore hiding, enjoying their holidays, and getting fat over the next three and a half months, before moving to within a hunred yards of land,in order to play "catch me if you can" with our shore anglers:D

the last couple of days has seen them play the same game with the boat lads, and the fash are just aboot winning at the minute:D
