Daiwa 7HT Mag ST

Hi Guys, I agreed to have a look at my mates reel which is the above model as he is experiencing a fault with it. Was wondering if anybody else had experienced this fault. The reel makes a creaking noise when you operate it, you can generate the noise if you just hold the reel and put a little pressure on the spool, if you are reeling in whilst fishing it's horrendous. I am an engineer an have had many reels apart and never seen anything like this. When I operated the reel, I could feel movement in the full handle shaft. I removed the right side plate, nothing obvious at first, then I spotted the fault. There is a bearing housing which looks like it has been pressed into the side plate. It houses a caged bearing and allows handle shaft to travel through the center and to be supported by the bearing. it looks like the bearing housing has small teeth at the base to help it grip the side plate, (to stop rotation). The movement is at the base where these teeth are, the whole housing is moving, generating a creaking noise. The reel is approximately 1 year old but has only been used a few times, it has not been dropped and is immaculate. I plan to call Daiwa on Monday to see if they will offer any warranty or if it is a known fault. I suspect the side plate and housing would have to be replaced. looking at the diagram supplied with the reel, the housing is part of the side plate.
any advice or response from anyone who has also had this problem would be appreciated.
Cheers andy

hi ive got two for then and had no problems at all hope you get it sorted these reels are mint

I have the model down from yours and is nearly 3 years old now. I have found that it needs regular lubrication now shes getting on a bit , only noises would be dried bearings I have had in the past.

It's probs making weird noises because its not a fishing reel its a tournament casting reel for tackle tarts on the plus side I should imagine it will be covered by the way overpriced tag it has

Hopefully it's still within warranty mate, if not daiwa might sort it anyway as their a good company IMO. If them fail it sounds like it may be an expensive repair, might cost as much as getting a new 7HT mag and I aint joking. Good luck to yer mate, mate.

If there's a lot of play in the handle it could benefit from having a pinion support sleeve fitted - sounds like it could be that the pinion gear has got knackered. It's a common problem with the 7HT series apparently - even the ST.

Gary :)

But it's only been used a few times.

I forgot to mention the pinion support. This is a common weak point of all 7HT's. I fitted one to mine as precaution and peace of mind.

you are better off getting in touch with diawa .i have a friend down kent who along wth his pals have had the same prob .diawa will do the repair job they have done some already they know there is a prob.

But it's only been used a few times.

One big ball of weed or some over-enthusiastic cranking's all it takes sometimes.....:(

It's a shame, Daiwa should know better by now, but it seems they won't fess up to the inherent design flaw.

Gary :)

OK mate, you know better than me. I've got to say though that I aint had a problem with me turbo and it's done some cranking, weed like:D
But if there is a design fault I would have thought it would have been sorted especially on a reel that costs that much.
