After running a few errands in the morning, I was out of Amble marina at 10.45. The wind was freshening all the time and once out of the lee of the land it was pretty bumpy. I didn't go far and tried the reefs around Hauxley, without a bite. The wind eased around noon so I hugged the shore and got down to Cresswell where conditions were not too bad.
I'd got fresh lug, rag, some old smelly frozen lug and frozen prawns. Water clarity was good, down to about 4-5 feet, and the drift was perfect at 0.6 knots. Water temp was registering 6.2C. There was a steady flow of codling, mostly in the 1-1.5lb size, with a couple up to 2.5lb. Frozen prawn seemed to be the preferred offering.
I picked up a couple of small coalies too, so hunted around for some smaller jigs, but soon lost the smallest one. I tried a larger one, but was probably too big. I didn't have a great deal of tackle with me so I had a couple of drifts using feathers and caught more coalies up to 1lb.
The better fish were starting to show a couple of hours from low water, but that was also the time to head back in. It was good to give the boat a run out and help clear some of the crud from the bottom, and take home a couple of codling for dinner. Everything else went back.
