Casting Lessons

Hi, I've been doing a bit of casting practice lately and I feel like Ive hit a bit of brick wall, I can hit 140m with 5oz over grass max and I'm getting 120m consistently with a uni-cast, but I just cant seem to get any further.

Ive tried a few full otg casts, but I just cant get the timing or trajectory right. I feel like I've gone as far as I can by myself and could do with a lesson or two, also it would be helpful to speak to someone about the rod I'm using, it's a 16ft abu hellbender with a shimano ultegra 5500, reel is great but I'm not loving the rod. So does anyone know of someone who can help me out, I'm happy to pay the going rate and travel.

Many Thanks

Rich

I think you've said it yourself Rich, the rod probably isn't suited to your casting. I've only got one 16ft rod (a Sonik SK4) and it performs best with a long, slow overhead type cast, allowing the rod to load properly. For general fishing / casting I'm sure something in the 13 - 14ft range would suit you much better.

Trying to suggest which one is where the fun begins as you'll no doubt get loads of different opinions - best is always to try & have a go with something before parting with your cash. As Jim says, have a word with some of the casting boys as well as they'll be able to point you in the right direction, suited to your current ability, and give you some pointers on how to improve your technique.

Cheers Gary your right, it just doesn't feel right, having said that the only rod I've used before that is a greys bze 12 and a half foot bass rod and I can get 110m+ with that with an over head thump. I bought the 16footer stupidly thinking that I could buy extra distance, I really should have known better, I should have sent it back as soon as I got it, really but you live and learn, or at least you hope you do:red:

when using the longer rods 15 to 16 footers do you couple them with a fixed spool reel and could you tell me the reason why, i ask this because i think i read somewhere that you have to use a f,s reel with the longer type beach casters, cheers.

No mate, I use multies on mine - there is a fixed spool version with fewer, bigger rings, but there's nothing in general to stop you using a multiplier on a long rod.

I don't use anything bigger than an SL20 size reel though as the rod is rated 4-6oz and designed for cleaner ground.

Gary :)
