Two men had to be rescued after a fishing boat broke down off the coast at Seaburn.
Volunteers from Sunderland's RNLI had to help the crew of the boat which had suffered gearbox failure.
Coastguard Officers received a 999 call at about 5.20pm yesterday from the crew, reporting that they had lost all power and were drifting.
The RNLI launched its Atlantic 85 lifeboat Martin Harvey and a shore-
based Coastguard Rescue Team, as the fishing vessel dropped anchor at Parson's Rock in Seaburn to wait for help.
The two-man crew from Sulgrave, Washington – were towed to the North Dock Marina slipway.
Paul Nicholson, senior helmsman at Sunderland RNLI, said: "The quick thinking of the crew in carrying and deploying their anchor prevented the vessel running aground on Parson's Rock.
"The RNLI encourages all boat owners to carry a suitably sized anchor and line, which can be used in the event of emergency's developing."
The RNLI is offering a free boat advice service as part of its ongoing sea safety campaign.
The Sea Check is not a test or inspection, but is a face-to-face safety advice service carried out on the client's boat.
