Two men had to be rescued after a fishing boat broke down off the coast at Seaburn.
Volunteers from Sunderland's RNLI had to help the crew of the boat which had suffered gearbox failure.

Coastguard Officers received a 999 call at about 5.20pm yesterday from the crew, reporting that they had lost all power and were drifting.

The RNLI launched its Atlantic 85 lifeboat Martin Harvey and a shore-
based Coastguard Rescue Team, as the fishing vessel dropped anchor at Parson's Rock in Seaburn to wait for help.

The two-man crew from Sulgrave, Washington – were towed to the North Dock Marina slipway.

Paul Nicholson, senior helmsman at Sunderland RNLI, said: "The quick thinking of the crew in carrying and deploying their anchor prevented the vessel running aground on Parson's Rock.

"The RNLI encourages all boat owners to carry a suitably sized anchor and line, which can be used in the event of emergency's developing."

The RNLI is offering a free boat advice service as part of its ongoing sea safety campaign.

The Sea Check is not a test or inspection, but is a face-to-face safety advice service carried out on the client's boat.

To arrange a Sea Check, tel 0800 328 0600.

And thats why i donate to them, they do an excellent job and without there service there would have been more live claimed by the sea.

Well done RNLI! :D

Well done the R.N.L.I. what would we do without them. Donations are what is needed to keep this valuable service up and running. For the last two years when taking fillets of fish around my neighbours doors, I carry a lifeboat box, and ask them to make a donation of however much they want in return for fish. They all thought it a great idea. 2008 = £93. 2009 =£87. :D

Great idea, maybe thats something we should all consider, they need every penny they can get.:)

I was on the pier fishing and saw it all, the guys did look relieved as the lifeboat was towing them past. Well done the R.N.L.I.

As mentioned on a previous thread I still think a NESA calendar could sell well. We have a load of talented and sometimes lucky:) photographers on here. I am sure we could raise a bit for the RNLI with one. Could be double sided sea angling one side and Fluff chucking on other. A NESA badge might also be an idea. It would be nice to recognise other members when fishing with maybe a quid to charity for each. I am game to help to help out in any way if admin think there is any mileage in it.

Maybe these ideas have been raised before.

Jonny:)
