What with one thing and another (being skint, starting a new job) I haven't been out to wet a line in over two months now so with a few pennies in the bank and a full tank of diesel in the Hippo I decided it was finally time to get back in the game this weekend.
With a job in Gateshead last thing Friday it was ideal to dodge by Moonfleet and grabn some ragworm and a couple of packs of Bluey for the freezer. The intial plan had been to fish the ebb on Shields Saturday night but a miserable day and a bottle of wine put paid to that one. instead I decided to head for Roker and fish over the high on Sunday evening.
Got to my mark a couple of hours before HT and set up with a spinning rod and baitcaster multiplier loaded with braid dropped over the side and a big rod lobbed out just on the off chance. Within seconds the spinning rod was going mental and the blank was saved with a lovely bronze coloured Pout on the pier (photo doesn't do the colour justice):
Next drop I had a tiny LS Bullhead and I thought "here we go":
Unfortunately from here on in things went very quiet, in fact so quiet that for the rest of the flood I didn't get a sniff. HT came, the tide turned and my only entertainment was watching the afternoon shift of Mackerel Bashers leave and the evening shift start to arrive. Then out of nowhere a stonking take on the big rod lifted the butt off the deck (braid
) and after a scrap the belied it's size a just undersized codling was landed:
As the ebb kicked in a dusk began to fall the fish really switched on. It was none stop action on the down the side rod, mainly micro Coalies but I also managed my first Rockling of the year (whoo - hoo!) and a stonker at that:
Another Rockling, more LS Bullheads and more Coalies than you could shake a stick at came up the side, best of the Coalies going 32cm:
All in all a cracking evenings fishing despite the strong westerly wind that made the fishing a bit more of a pain than it needed to be but at least it blew the cobwebs away and I can't wait to be out again soon...
