After having no luck on shields beach and shields pier on Saturday and Sunday, I decided to pick somewhere different and an easy venue for a day session on bank holiday Monday, so went up to Amble with a couple of mates, it was Marc's first time fishing with us, so I was hoping he'd get something.

Takes less than an hour to get there (from shields), parking is right at the pier, and it's clean ground in the river, it would be an ideal mark for anyone with young kids for a day out.

Got there for half ten and set up at the corner where the pier and breakwater join; I got a flounder first cast, Sean got one not long after, but nothing for Marc.

After a couple more flounder I moved round to the front of the breakwater and fished into the rough ground with my big rod, and used the float rod over the rocks, trying for wrasse and coleys, but got nothing after an hour or so, so started fishing back into the river.

Me and Sean were getting fish every few casts, but was still looking like a blank for Marc, but then he got a tiny flounder around high tide at half 2.

Then he stared getting them steadily and took over Sean and caught up to me with a double shot of a Coley and a Flounder.

I had a few chucks from near the end of the pier, and got an Eelpout, a first for me :D

The fishing started dying off about 2 hours after high, so we packed up at half five. A draw between me and Marc with 10 fish each and 2 species each, Sean got biggest fish at around 30cm.

Had a really good day of easy fishing and good weather, with 28 fish altogether. :D

Great report and pictures and well done on catching a few fish. I often fish Amble pier with my granddaughter as it`s a nice safe place to fish for the young`uns. We usually only fish the spot you were fishing from during the winter months when there are some good codling to be caught. This time of year we normally fish at the second or third bench as it`s a great spot for flattie bashing and you can get a few coalies and eels there as well. It fishes well from low water right through until about 2 hours after high tide, so you can have a good 8 hour session catching fish right the way through. Lug or rag tipped with a sliver of mackerel seems to be the best bait. If you fish there again during the summer give this spot a go, it`s well worth it and it often throws up some bigger specimens.

Thanks. We had all the fish on Ragworm. To be honest I was thinking when we were there that further down might be better - when we first got there I could see the sandbanks over near that wooden jetty in the middle of the river. I will be going back up again, when I fancy another session like that, and I'll try where you said.
